The focus on costs indicates precisely the concern about the ongoing strength of the advertising business.

For this day, they can feel good, but this is a signal that Page is facing the fact that the search advertising business may have hit the limits of growth or even be in jeopardy well before they've managed to develop another business.

They could all be open sourced. Google chooses not to open source them in order to control the platform and develop leverage over their partners.

That would create a lot more jobs for copyright attorneys whose job it would be to create byzantine licensing schemes and aggressively bully people to stop valuable copyrights from being deemed to have become a cultural property.

Why do you bring this up? Do you think my comment involved taking a side?

You make it sound as though being easily manipulated by people with a lot of resources is a character flaw, rather than a characteristic of all humans throughout history. It is unlikely (and maybe even undesirable) that we are going to be a

They are pedantic if they don't affect usability significantly, and to determine that one needs to know whether users are impacted - not whether they conform to a principle.

This is basically clickbait designed to capitalize on the new service. With zero observation of what people want and how they experience it, he conducts a dry and pedantic assassination of the UI. I've talked to 4 regular users today a

True, but pointing out multiple interpretations adds nothing unless you can tell us about the other factors. What are they?

It has been rising in the U.S. and Europe. I imagine you're pretending you didn't know that, but it's not clear why.

> The Internet has already redistributed earth shattering quantities of wealth in record time. Given that inequality has been steeply rising, you must mean that it has redistributed wealth further from the poor to the rich.

Ok, I think it's reasonable to accept this. However one could equally well describe these open source browsers, as browsers funded by Google and Apple. Perhaps that's why they are outliers.

Today, no open source browser is clearly more featureful and functional than the closed source alternatives, so seems like a transient aberration rather than a canonical example.

Sure but that's easily fixed by stipulating that ad supported services are not eligible for the payout.

This is simply false. Apple's deal shares more revenue with the artists than any other service. Therefore if users adopt Apple Music, the artists will get more in aggregate. http://recode.net/2015/06/15/

By your logic, Apple should pay for the music and give it away free since they are the ones who will benefit. But that means that if revenues rise as a result of the new service, Apple should keep all the extra profit rather than sharing it

Pay-per-use would be far better for developers making deep apps that people actually use regularly than those making trivial 99c apps that are discarded quickly. Currently, an app like Omnioutliner or Clear that improves a person's p

Can you explain why that wouldn't be a great deal for app developers? I develop iOS apps, and I'd love it if apple moved to a pay for use model. I care about a world where the most useful apps are rewarded.

Except that there is vigorous competition in this market. Amazon and Google, Spotify, RDIO are all hailed as innovating on how we buy music. Apple is simply updating its service to respond to consumer demand.

Ownership isn't measured by the ability to do what you want with something. It's the exclusive right to do what you want with something. Apple's music licenses do not prevent artists or labels from selling their music elsewh
