To keep code+schema in sync, try using liquibase or flyway or similar tools to manage all SQL DDL, end ensure your build+deploy process always runs your liquibase/flyway scripts.

With 4-5 concurrent processes reading from my (FIFO?) SQS queue, I have a hard time seeing the contents of the queue from the console. SQS really doesn't handle the concurrent readers well in my experience.

Human teeth development changed sometime during the industrial revolution when women were expected to work outside the home and breastfeeding norms were shortened from 3-4 years to more like 1 year. Or that's at least one interesting h

So if Moore's Law is slowing down and expected to end in 2025 (per it's Wikipedia entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law ), does this "bitter lesson" then need to be reversed?

My first job was 7 years at a startup. The grit and git-er-done you have from there is hard to find in the marketplace of employees; you'll be fine. How to prepare? I'd sit down and do a postmortem. What happened... what you learn

I liked Tolkein's original book cover: it highlights the dilemma of the rings of power: all rings lead to Sauron's eye, especially the one ring: http://i.imgur.com/hKUaH3i.jpg Kind of like using the internet: You

Typically it's not free money. You chose to forgo getting/negotiating a greater discount on the purchase price. There's no way the lender could do business otherwise.

For scripting database changes so they are deployed with app changes... or so they are automated and auto-tested upon deployment and in version control, I've had good success with open source Liquibase. Worth looking at Flyway also.

Speaking of liver toxicity, acetominophen/tylenol and alcohol can kill you. Not in the common case but if you are maxing out the acetaminophen for a prolonged period and drink and stop drinking, you should get educated on the dynamics

I hear you about the DIMMs and ROBOCOPY. Tip: I spend less time on that hardware minutia and backup reliability and restore operations now that I rent servers on AWS. You might want to try it. Focus your time where your value add is. Also

Trump has complained about it publicly and is working to withdraw us while the Democrats spin it as Trump trying to withdraw from a 200-year old treaty - we should fix it instead (but we also tried that once and failed in 2016). I haven

The downside is that the public will spend 10s of billions only for some billionaire "startup" to hire away the physics expertise and the public ends up paying a monopolistic/oligopolistic premium. Now theres nothing new abo

How could cheap/free energy ever not lead to global warming, given the second law of thermodynamics?

Billionaires are investing. See TriAlpha. Cheap unlimited energy leads to heat pollution per the laws of thermodynamics. Asimov Foundation series first book warned about this in passing. Be careful what you wish for!

I have been super-unsatisfied with the status quo of Cloudwatch; it is not a production grade logging system if it allows you to keep zillions of streams in logs but provides A) no way to search through them all to find the last time you ha
