I'm curious if this is not only an effect, but also a cause. If the news reports that it is unusual for women to be in computing, doesn't that in a small way reinforce that message within popular culture? Newsweek should know better.

I bought a $250 pack (minimum purchase) of these coins from the Mint, incented slightly by the $5 in profit I'd make from the credit card transaction, but mostly because I thought it would be fun. I however have intentionally tried to "put

Doubtful. Credit card companies charge a percentage of the transaction cost to the seller. Usually sellers just mark up their goods accordingly, so the buyer is the loser. The buyer's only recourse is to use a rewards program to get some

Adding more people to a software project often has the effect of making it take longer, at least for mid to near term milestones. Quadrupling sounds like the adage of pouring gasoline on a fire.

I find it amazing how collected and professional folks stayed during this. They reported the issue, communicated information, nobody seems to have freaked out like I probably would have.

I came here to say the same thing. Modifying the maps from bing/yahoo to simulate the effects that google provided must have taken forever. Even doing something like adding an extra pixel or two of white background to 90ish cities would t

I've never looked at commute time data before, so I'm just an armchair analyst. It seems to me though, as a driver, that commute times are dominated by accidents. And certainly while you could estimate the mean probability of an accident b

The easiest argument against your second point is precisely because we don't expect to find it. Frequently if findings disagree very strongly with our preconceptions (as one like this would), we are likely to dismiss them, not notice them,

This may all be true, but the particular example we are discussing does not support your point. I don't see how whether or not another company knows who received raises has an rats ass to do with innovation.

This is a meaningless calculation. It's not as though the amount of energy required to move something a specific distance is weight related. The amount of force required to accelerate it to a specific velocity is, but once at that velocit

I initially thought this was going to be some rogue app that looks like a game, fart machine or something innocuous but behind the scenes sends your text messages to the developer. That would definitely be unfortunate and is a risk. Altho

Someone posted on HN a couple weeks back about the story ranking algorithm. PG mentioned that there were some hidden tweaks, but the basic idea was a function of number of votes and age of the article since submission (a "gravitational" te

In the wikipedia world, there is a bit of a difference between a programming language (Go!) and a company (Tarsnap) in the likelihood of it having a page. I think the threshold for a company would be higher in wikipedia.

I doubt this guy visits used book shops. He mentions thrift shops. Used book shops generally are quite savvy to the real value of a book in the same way this guy is. They are profiting from the same arbitrage he is. Used book shops have

I doubt wheat is the most energy efficient plant. I'd guess it's actually pretty poor, although it may be one of the best in terms of us eating it. That said, you tend to lose a ton of efficiency if you grow a plant, cut it down, process i

Sort of, a plant converts a net positive of CO_2 to O_2. This is also another one of those cases where some folks can misunderstand the statement to believe that plants somehow take in all this CO_2 and scrub it of Carbon. Not really, that

Many (hard to say how many) drivers will drive too fast because they are late for something. If you assume that their only goal is to either be on time, not be less late, then speeding makes sense, even in a simulation. Said driver has no

It would be smart if the length of the word was directly proportional to the duration of the link. 5-minute links might be more likely to get a 5-letter word, whereas a 24 hour link might be more likely to be a 10-12 letter word. Otherwis

Generally when this type of thing happens, Google will reply with a captcha that, if you correctly solve it, will let you keep going for a while. I guess toolbar requests might be a little different than web requests.
