There is no such thing as a safe hardware vendor at this time unfortunately. The good thing about Google is they are the only company that actually lets you swap out the software to at least improve your privacy (but they penalize you by bl

I think libgen and scihub are even more future proof. Something as important as scientific (or any) literature must be distributed and uncensorable. Libraries are destroyed by authoritarians all the time throughout history.

Or better, use matrix/element if you can (the backbone technology of Beeper). It's an open protocol not beholden to one central server (Signal/WhatsApp/Telegram/Discord) that could go out of business, get bought, or

Airlines and banks do have to have to prove compliance with formal standards via audit to operate. These audits often require revealing some code to regulators under NDA. So our trust in them stands on sturdy ground compared to the offering

But that's tracking your web requests to search engine servers. The way those requests look is dependent on your browser, not which ROM you are running. You can setup your user agent to be whatever you'd like at least on android o

AOSP is not a deviation from the norm. It's the thing Google ships, vendors install play services as separate apps on top, so there is nothing oddball about your device fingerprint just by not installing Google specific services like t

The best you can do now is run whatsapp apk on an emulator or spare device, then auth that with the matrix bridge, then you can avoid needing to use whatsapp clients on daily drivers. Works decently well: https://github.com/

If it requires government support for us to have a strong arts and humanities thread in society because the private sector can't keep it thriving, please take my tax money. STEM supports life, but art is the point of life.

Youtube could disappear or, more realistically, become heavily censored (internally or externally) at any time for a variety of reasons. The true value of this project and other federated or fully distributed and open source alternatives is

Yeah, I don't see how windows or mac could ever be considered secure when you can't turn off telemetry and when the systems are closed source and cannot be publicly audited. Linux lets you be as secure as you need to be. The milit

I cannot imagine using the play store or the apple store ever again. What hell. This is the true value of Android vs. iOS though: Google can do whatever corporate nonsense Google does, and I can live in my own parallel universe that works f

Is that possible anymore? I think all new cars are always online and always collecting data now, and you void your warranty (very different cost/benefit calculus than voiding a phone warranty) if you tamper with the antennas to keep it

Science historically works on the time scale of decades and centuries, not months and years imo. So I think it's working faster and better than ever before. Journals are not science, just a small tool for slightly better communication

Google employees can do that in my opinion. These aren't coal miners in small town Virginia with no options. They are (for the most part) tech elites who could work just about anywhere.

More practically, supply chains are finite. No single company, even as big as Apple, can make enough units for everyone.
