I have a Strix Halo based HP ZBook G1A and it's been pretty easy getting local models to run on it. Training small LLMs on it has been a bit harder but doable as well. Mind you, I 'only' have 64 GB with mine. Under Linux, get

I also have one with 64gb — best laptop I've ever used :-). I have the same regret of not waiting for the 128gb version to be available before buying.

The HP zbook g1a ultra is as close as you can get with Strix Halo. There are two screen options and the OLED one is high resolution. It's Ubuntu certified as well and can run LLMs nicely. The keyboard, trackpad, etc are all to notch. I

Sure, I can chime in. I've been using emacs for about 18 years with meow for the last 4 or 5. I have the caps lock as control switch for about 10 years so it's not about that for me. I still edit with chords in insert mode but meo

This 1000x. I was working in Europe for a big American company, which will remain nameless, and they started shutting down most, if not all, of their European operations. A change in the US tax code made software development amortize over 5

Both are possible. You can have alternative app stores on Android without any restrictions — the most famous example would be F-Droid which hosts free software. Nothing stops Epic, Meta or any company from also having such a store. When you

This happened to me recently in Austria, I had to get a new phone to be able to do internet banking. You can only use the app with attestation from the PlayStore, AppStore or surprisingly Huawai store. When I complained repeately that this

Sadly that's not always (or won't be soon) an option. I recently had to buy a new phone so that I could run the 'updated' banking app that requires attestation to run — I was running google free Lineage. Without attestat

llama.cpp and lmstudio have a Vulkan backend which is pretty fast. I'm using it to run models on a Strix Halo laptop and it works pretty well.

I somewhat recently settled on using use-package and straight — I highly recommend this approach. You can get pretty far using what comes with emacs and adding a bit more. You can see how I do it in my emacs config[1] but it's a little

It's funny, the comment also uses the em dash (—) which is usually a giveaway for AI — very few people know where it is on the keyboard. Sadly for me, I really like using it and an international keyboard makes it easy.

Thanks for the feedback, I removed the text highlighting. Hopefully it reads better. You might have to control+f5 to see the changes, I had to.

I would see that C++11 started the modern C++ era and the later standards have refined and perfected it. I would be very sad to have to go back to C++98, it would feel like a different language — I would only be inconvenienced to go back to

As far as I know, many experienced C++ programmers have a list of warnings they use for their projects and it varies by industry since different compilers will have different flags. When I was working on bigger C++ projects, one of the seni

Author here, I do prefer a language like Rust that makes all of this automatic but that isn't always an option. There are other parts of Rust that can be hard as well. I wrote this article for a few friends who have recently started wo

Author here, that's a good approach :-). I see shared_ptr as a code smell since shared ownership makes life difficult.

Author here, parent comment describes it very well — shared_ptr are a last resort, not a first one. They are quite heavily (and badly) used in some code bases (ROS). I'm planning a future article that covers shared_ptr in more details.

Author here, I put that in place for people who skim articles or paragraphs — this is a surprising amount of people. Would it be better if it was more subtle? Were you reading in dark or light mode?

C++ is a difficult language to use well but it becomes a lot easier when you turn on the 'correct' warnings. Turning on the `-Wdeprecated-copy-dtor` warning would help you not forget one of the cases in the rule of 3. I would have

Author here, what you say is entirely correct — I didn't emphasize enough that this was all possible before in a more limited way. Those parts were cut out to try to make the article more focused on understanding RAII. The modern parts

This project looks amazing — I didn't think bootstrapping like this was possible. Kudos on the project :-). This might displace chainguard as my goto docker images :-).

Most essential resources aren't consumed but part of cycles — food, water, shelter. These cycles are sustained by energy and, if we were to use it well, the sun alone provides more than enough. A simple example of this is that water is

There's perf/watt but also area on the core that's an important factor. Watt and area are often related but not always. Do you know how the A510 cores and Apple's efficiency cores compare on area?
