I guess I’m asking the functionality in particular for small teams. Anyone using AWS isn’t concerned with the physical :)

I dare say the phenomenon is real and our understanding is lacking.

I think a lot of developers may not appreciate the fleshy human parts of organisations, given most of our efforts to date as an industry are typically to reduce headcount, but staff really are key to any successful organisation.

I have never heard of a control plane before this AWS outage, sounds instructive without needing an explanation but for 1-2 person what does a control plane provide?

You asked what’s the point of a machine based global pool of dependencies - I answered: it’s an OS.

I don’t think people consider things from a first principles perspective these days. “…I can't see any valid use case for a machine-global pool of dependencies…” - Rhetorical question for OP but how do you run an operating system witho

I think it’s a fair point to say it was considered as a serious threat to certain countries(US/Russia/UK/China etc). And militaries certainly did prepare for it. But other than Switzerland with all their bunkers - which socie

Thanks for posting, a lot of effort went into that and I think the quality shines through in the write up. I write pretty lean HTML/vanilla JS apps on the front end & C#/SQL on the backend; and have had great customer success

What existential threat to society do people/society really take seriously?

My first thought was is JavaScript === case insensitive for string comps, because while I do use minimal JavaScript to enhance some web pages functionality it’s all basic vanilla JS. But the answer is actually batshit crazy.

Can you disable javascript on an iPhone? I certainly use NoScript add-on on my PC’s. Very few domains get the go ahead to run JS for me.

Bro were you off grid last week. Your questions equally apply to AWS, you just magically handwave away all those questions as if AWS/GCP/Azure outages aren’t a thing.

Not sure what you mean by done statically in the context of a report writer? Columns are added, removed, pivoted, summed etc by the user running the report. This can’t be static but the OP was mentioning how you can’t get column meta data e

In MSSQL you can select top 0 * into a temp table and retrieve all the usual column meta data. I’ve written basic custom report writer functionality using this technique that lets users(usually me the developer or a super user) do custom sa

I changed my home setup to MX Linux a couple of months ago. The PC is so damn snappy compared to Win10 with all the garbage updates. I don’t want widgets on my Lock Screen. I don’t want to know about Candy Crush when I open the Start Menu.

It’s not a small decision to switch database vendors. Worrying that your data query language works across multiple vendors DB’s is not a concern ever considered imho.

I feel like a lot of people are only just discovering history and that this is absolutely nothing new. Ancient Greeks had a word, demagogue, that isn’t used much but captures certain past/current political figures so well.

The only real startup I’ve had the privy of looking into financials had 5 figure AWS bills and literally 5 customers. Single digit customers. And the product was sending SMS’s. Startups are clown shows for burning OPM.

It’s amusing the outages of hyper scalers are posted here on HN regularly enough but there’s plenty of turkeys in this thread mentioning you have to use hyper scalers if you need 100% uptime. Newsflash - no one has 100% and your over equiti

I switched my at home setup to MX Linux just in the last 2 months for dissatisfaction with even Win10. Win11 is a hard no, I’m keeping a laptop with Win10 for the small amount of games I play. I will likely even try WINE for them soon but j
