Think of it as a commenting or documentation system that's also interpreted by the language. Comments that can never get out of date. If you think that human-readable comments and documentation are not useful... then I'm not going

I'm not aware of a language that allows operator overloading for matrix operations, but denies you access to c.Mul(a,b) or the equivalent when you need it. I find operator overloading pretty crucial for prototyping this sort of algorit

Isn't this taking a somewhat narrow definition of "the e-mail space"? Slack, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. all seem like successful innovations that lots of people use to communicate instead of email.

Kind of an inflammatory title (but from the original article, so not a complaint about HN). "Physicists hope to learn more about physics from the Higgs Boson" seems more accurate. :)

I work on research close to this area -- time series w/ macro applications, but not on these specific models. These specific models are very very important for estimating the effects of monetary policy decisions, forecasting, etc. beca

I agree with you, but that's not a decision that can be made unilaterally by professors at the course level without sacrificing _a lot_ of the other content. You're going to cry if you see the current standards of undergraduate sp

This also provides a lot of justification/support for those of us who'd much rather teach (say) macroeconometrics in julia instead of matlab.

I think you'd be surprised. I put "I ran my simulations in Julia, talk to me about it" on a slide at a talk in the spring and was really surprised by who was already using it.

I have high hopes for Julia, but it's not really competing with Mathematica AFAIK, so I'm not really sure what's behind these claims.

I might be misrembering, but I think that it was assumed for a while that perl would be used for data munging, so there wasn't much effort put into that part of the language. That's being addressed now by packages, and a lot of th

In my anecdotal experience, econ PhD students are a lot more likely to take graduate math classes than cs PhD students. The PhD probability sequence was more or less a standard part of the econometrics course work in my program. Admittedly,

I wouldn't call that view "unfair and offensive to economists," just not super original or useful. There are huge financial and societal rewards to producing "better economics" than we have now (i.e., you'd do

I'd like it to be a bigger part of economics training, but most econ majors have about a year of formal statistics/econometrics as a year of their coursework.

Generally agree, but "theories ... have mathematical proofs behind them" doesn't distinguish computer science from economics. And I think you'd be surprised at the level of mathematical sophistication of a lot of econ. (

Even managers/companies that would be happy for someone to take a few months sabbatical from their job would probably not want to be asked a day or two before the sabbatical would start.
