Useful and enjoyable. The idea that there has to be top-tier publications on a language for it to be on Wikipedia will leave us with a lot of boring Wikipedia topics.

If the problem is pollution of the main lists of programming language articles by entries that Mr. Monsanto considers to be inappropriate for listing...wouldn't an appropriate compromise be removing them from these programming languages lis

I may be wrong, but hasn't this article already come up on HN before? Maybe I've just seen it before, it's not new.

The Fed may have surpassed China as the largest buyer of debt, but it may not be the largest holder. Where do you think all the money in the Social Security trust fund went, eh? Hint: It's somewhere in the blue part of the pie ;-) http:/

Is it really the case that the demand is so high or that supply is kept artificially low by tradesmen apprenticeship programs? I thought that was the point of the trades...to reduce competition by decreasing the number of competitors. Tho

That's incorrect. They hold 20% of US Debt held by foreign countries. In the total scheme of things I think it amounts to somewhere between 6-9% of the total US debt.

For fairness sake, I with the author would note the version of the C compiler they used. Otherwise saying PyPy is faster than C is like saying "my 2010 Toyota Prius is faster than a car in a carefully crafted example". Sorry to sound like

I agree. I dove into Haskell without doing any of the prior, and it was like running into a brick wall. However, persistence paid off in my case, but I do wonder how I would have handled it if I would have spent time with OCaml beforehand

It appears to be using the data from KCK. If it's pulling the population data from there it might be a safe bet that everything else is from KCK, too. That being said, regardless, I think the entire bit about KC being ranked up near San F

What would be cool on top of this is if they figured in mortgage prices, the average home upkeep costs for a certain area, insurance prices, and property taxes (whew, it'd be hard) to determine if you're flat out better of renting or buying

Nice "Sid Meier's: Alpha Centauri" video game quotation. I don't see how "Pravin Lal's" sentiment applies here. Apple is probably just doing this to improve the bottom line on warranties by preventing people who lack the knowhow/desire to

I agree, especially on the part about law. "Legalese" is like natural language programming. It's very well structured, but very hard to parse for people not in the know (like myself). I think writing solid contracts is very much like wri

I had to reread your first sentence quite a few times. You're saying that software engineers in total have had more of an effect on society than lawyers or law enforcement officers? If this is really what you're saying, I think that you a

I found it sort of silly in both articles that they make a universal qualification, but then follow up their reasoning based on more or less anecdotal, personal evidence. Whether you're Chinese or American, it doesn't make you superior at

I'm not sure about the loans you get to go to law school, or the loans he got, but I was under the impression that student loans are something that you can't get out of if you declare bankruptcy, just like alimony or something like that. A

This sounds like a pretty expensive toy to me. It seems like chemical irritants (ex tear gas) would be more effective, and cheaper? I suppose you could get gas masks, but those might be harder to come by than oh, say, a 2x4 to hold in fro

The mortgage crises all but crushed any confidence I had left in the major players in the American (and probably the global) financial system. Any BS that Goldman is trying to pull is just more of the same. Anything to make a quick buck.

"If a copyright holder doesn't effectively exist like in this scenario" I was surmising a scenario where one did not exist to point out an issue with the parent post. Of course this situation would almost never occur in reality.
