What about other init systems? The GP said "any alternative." I am not familiar with how complex they are but was under the impression that there are a number much simpler than sysv init?

Is this true? Rare books would very often be out of copyright for a start. What the the actual ruling that says you can scan if you destroy the original? ISBNdb is a database of book information, as you would guess from the name.

I I start a process with nohup and logout I clearly want it to keep running. That is the entire point of nohup. If that process is killed when I logout then that is a regression. I do not understand what this has to do with udaptes.

The problem with systemd is not the init system. Most people who do not like systemd are happy with the init system, but do not want the rest of it.

You are framing this as the only choice being between systemd and shell scripts.

I think there is no evidence for it, but I think the point of the Silurain hypothesis (which the article does not convey well) is that if there were such civilisations we would not know as its unlikely we would find any evidence.

If whole populations were wiped out and the world was repopulated by a small remnant would that not account for it? Or if an extinct human species had an advanced civilisation?
