You won't have much luck. MS based corporate outfits like to hire ready trained monkeys so you will get very little buy in from management. I've taken 5 years and several critical arguments to get a couple of MySQL instances in one of them

I really disagree with this. The more features you use from your DBMS vendor, the more you shoot yourself in the following departments: - scalability. Logic and processing in the server is bad as it means you can only scale up and not scale

It's getting like a nightmare vision of capitalism in the 1980s. You know like Robocop or Gremlins 2 where the city sold out to corporations. Corporate interest over common sense. We'll just have to mail DivXs to each other like we did in t

That isn't "working on an iPad". That's a dumb terminal. For those of us who can't rely on a permanent connection, it's a useless and somewhat risky concept.

The problem is that a lot of people think it's a good idea because they are ignorant fucktards and believe any spiel that comes out of the media terror promoters. this may sound horrible, but I genuinely hope someone innocent gets injured o

I'm not paying for something I can have anywhere I want already for nothing. EDIT: To clear this up - installing python on your computer is cheaper, has better support, no limits, is far faster interactively and has really good support. I k

I will say I got a nasty zap off a fake Lenovo charger a couple of years ago. The mains power cable had fallen slightly out, resulting in the earth pin not contacting. The device had a short between neutral and ground thanks to piss poor

I charge my devices overnight. I have a smoke alarm installed in the same room, an RCD on the socket and they sit on a solid granite surface! A few years ago I used to race radio controlled cars - the cells on them taught me a few lessons a

Tape. Tape is a sign of bad design that can be seen a mile away. The cans on the caps underneath are being kept away from the board with tape. That and the bare lead WTF in it. That and it's that retarded and dangerous 2-pin design (no grou

I tend to do this. Mainly because literally everything smartphone shaped frustrates the living shit out of me. Ironically I've had a Lumia 710 for about 3 months now and I have literally zero things to complain about.

Having owned an Apple Airport Express, I can assure you that it's just as dangerous and badly designed. Mine actually blew a cap and melted. I'd love to see the guts of a REAL Apple charger spilled out for examination next to it.

To be honest I've had every smartphone since the Treo 180 and the only one that actually doesn't make me want to gouge out my eyeballs due to endless problems is a Windows phone (Lumia 710). It just works which is an utter shock these days.

This is exactly why you should never mix data and code/markup. When the semantic barrier is broken, all shit breaks loose. I've always wondered if SICP style scheme would cause these sort of problems.

Firstly I will say, I like Microsoft. I'm sitting here on a Win7 laptop (dual boot Ubuntu) and have a Windows Phone next to me. But I don't like the culture that follows it around. I like Ubuntu and see it as a much more positive model and

That's a great idea. If you consider the potential for a "gaming appliance" (Valve console without all the commercial OS licensing costs then it really makes sense.

That's not really true - it makes full use of the hardware which is why a 1.4GHz single core ARM is fine :) I'd go as far as saying that the software and hardware are at one with each other.

Nice article - covers pretty much everything in a reasonable amount of detail. As for the author, it should be noted that he's a 17 year old who has been programming for 2 years. Good job - we need more people like that!

I'm using a circa 2007 core 2 duo. I genuinely see no improvement in CPUs since then in price/performance. Is there a reason I should upgrade my kit that I'm missing?
