Pharmaceutical companies spend 100's of millions developing new drugs, but it costs essentially nothing to manufacture those pills once they have FDA approval. Who expects medicine to be free because they cost nothing to replicate?

You're accounting for the worst-case scenario, which is fine, but I still don't know why we're behaving like Basecamp can't afford to hire folks to backfill people on leave.

Founders agree to all sorts of nefarious stuff they think will never be triggered to get to a signed term sheet. Investors will exercise this power when the incentives are misaligned with the founders (aka the company isn't doing well)

That's exactly what it means. You can choose to take a yearly LLC dividend of $2M instead of $10M to make sure your staff is well cared for. I'm not saying he should or needs to do that, it's just the economics of the situati

I think it's fair to say that given DHH's lifestyle, Basecamp can afford to do this. No judgement on how David choses to spend his time or money, I just think it's a little disingenuous to act like they're a normal start

It makes all the sense in the world when you realize how board's actually work.

Surprised there wasn't also the typical "want to spend time with family" part to cover the fact that the CEO was fired and a board seat was his consolation prize. If you want to raise $180M without a business model to become

I often wonder why the yearly fees even come up in these discussions. Presumably, if you aren't getting enough value to easily offset the cost, why on earth would you ever get the card. When I book hotels through Amex's FHR portal

#1 is right, but if you replace rural with exurban (which I think is more appropriate in this discussion), you're hugely improving the quality of life for millions with autonomous commutes.

> Civil unrest follows, with mass protests, a government crackdown, and the eventual disintegration of the U.S. as a nation-state. This is total lunacy if anyone is taking this prediction seriously. Unrest, protests, sure. The United Sta

Uber isn't going anywhere. Investors may take a short-term hit riding this wave of bad PR, but there's far too much machinery that will continue to push Kalanick's agenda forward. This thread is chock full of wishful thinking

A founder/CEO that built a $60B company with control of the board? Not a chance in hell he steps down. For each person telling him to resign, there are hundreds stroking his ego and encouraging him to carry on.

That's correct, but that has more to do with what happens at termination or liquidity events. It's very likely he had to forfeit everything, including any signing bonus (1 year timebomb is standard).

It's very simple when you realize they have everything to lose and little to gain by speaking up. I don't know how this isn't abundantly clear to anyone littering this thread with nonsense about evidence.

How many accounts of harassment do you need to believe there's a problem, out of curiosity? Nearly every woman in the industry has a story to tell, most say nothing. You'd know that if you'd bother to speak to any.

Much of this thread is people arguing this is embellished, untrue, the cost of doing business, or a conspiracy. Not to fear, I think your side of nonsense is safely represented. * the evidence pedant corrected my spelling

We need to stop doing this in every thread. These women are taking huge risks by speaking publicly and asking for proof is insulting to say the least.

Hero worship. Jack has done what few else could achieve: he built two multi-billion dollar businesses. The problem is that doesn't mean he can run both at the same time nor does it mean he's the correct long-term steward of both s
