I left it unsaid that I assumed SQLLite was normally used in places other than the traditional back end server data store - I tend to use postgreSQL / mysql or perhaps a noSQL variant such as couchDB/Mongo for server-side data. So I meant t

For me JSON has replaced SQLLite, with a large reduction in code and complexity. [ Admittedly I've written my own routines to access it more simply/directly on iOS ]

All of it, the general approach is wrong - so the nonsense is the part where you believe your current set of abstractions about distributed networks are adequate. Also the part where you reapply those same abstractions to fix the hole, with

This article reads like nonsense - but this is not a criticism of AWS. The real problem is there is no good mathematical model of distributed behaviour, from which statistical guarantees can be made. I think we're at the limit of what the s

You sound very self motivated, so I dont think you really need much advice. If you're already looking into Javascript, I would recommend jQuery for practical reasons, and Node.js for more subversive reasons. Have a look at source of some c

I suspect there are similarities to : Why aren't the smartest people the richest, why dont they get laid the most? The lisp language 'microkernel' is clearly a fundamentally important construct - the essential core of all computer language.

I think github is where the action is - HN these days seems more about navel gazing, posturing, karma chasing and down-vote wank-fests... and the result is uniformity. In contrast, the people who want to get-shit-done are changing the world

I [obviously] disagree.. while HTML DOM may be a mess, I think SVG + Javascript is a really nice way to do UI. The pain is almost all in the area of browser compatibility. I kind of agree with your point, in that I think there is a layer mi

Can anyone point me to a good architecture/dev overview of Gnome Shell and Unity ? I find it hard to sift out the marketing from the tech in what Ive seen.

These problems might take forever to solve [as the organisations are large]... In the meantime, I wouldn't be surprised if someone came up with a better technology model as a replacement. Id like to see a desktop development model more like

I remember writing a bit of assembler in A86 shareware on an 8086 machine with 640k RAM, 20Gb disk. One day I discovered it had a Hercules graphics card. Another day I found a book on TSR programs. Later came turbo C & turbo pascal, w

In absence of a better term for this, 'Sexual Assault' does convey the emotional experience of being abused in this way. Yes, it is clearly not about sexuality, but it is a situation where there is a massive imbalance of power. Who is th
