I think there's an accessible middle ground for most people. My first suggestion would be to get every account in a password manager like 1Password. In addition to the obvious security benefits, this creates a record of where all your

I'm really skeptical of these claims, but I hear them repeated often. Not that your description is wrong, but the assumed explanation of why. I suspect many people are in this category and people just have a bad classification for

I think all of this is reasonable and we'd probably have an interesting in-person discussion. I think flight is a good comparison. Before human flight it was possible to speculate about the risks. The machines we built turned out to us

It makes me curious though - I'm doing fine now, but could it help me do something truly great? Are most people doing truly great things on adderall? It'd be interesting to know.

Maybe? There were years without any viable option where I think people would have. Now that Apple is back in the game you're probably right.

What's weird to me is it doesn't take a genius to guess at what an Apple monitor would have looked like. Why can zero other companies execute on something like this? Sure Apple has advantages with scale, but it's not like the

I think we’re talking past each other. The point of the architecture example is not that it’d be done this way or that it’s practical - it’s just to point out that there’s nothing magical about us and if you had an existing model and ran it

Inputs can be replicated in other forms (cameras for example for visual input and computer vision). There’s a common misconception that AGI would be human like, consciousness is a mostly poorly defined orthogonal rabbit hole to the AGI ques

Why would it cook itself if it was replicated in silicon? I think it's a lot less likely humanity just happens to be at some natural limit of intelligence rather than being bounded by other unrelated constraints. AGI tradeoffs would be

It's more likely (imo) that humans are constrained by biological limits (energy, head size) than some true maximum. A simple thought experiment is the same architecture of the human brain (whatever that is), but just with way more powe

I can't really fault the tech companies for this, it's not a great place to be in and there isn't an obvious solution. The bad actors are explicitly exploiting an emergency provision intended for quick information return to p

I suspect everyone just performs better on amphetamines adhd or not. This was basically what erdos argued too iirc. I’ve been curious about it since I’ve never tried it but many people I know have. I’d be curious how much better I would be

I think that's an unfair characterization. I was replying to someone who said Krebs was "exactly right" - that's what I was pushing back on. My first comment was also more nuanced. The evidence exists for those who care

There was a lot of discussion at the time this stuff went down: https://www.theverge.com/2021/12/1/22812761/ubiquiti-data-br... The HN comment majority also changed from when I made my first comment. At

These types of attacks are extremely hard to defend against. Considering the nature of the attacker (and the HN comments about the guy at the time of the attack) my take away of ubiquiti from this event and their response was positive. I al

Krebs certainly did not get the story “exactly right” nor did he take responsibility for how wrong he was (and how he was used by the attacker).

This twitter thread is pretty bad and the comments here aren't much better. IIRC the Ubiquiti 'hack' was an insider attack from an employee lying and intentionally breaking things while pushing his lies to the press to hurt h

I acknowledge the higher risk associated with crypto and self-custody. I just think the capability it provides is valuable. Like most things it's a nuanced issue and it's not all good or bad. A lot of your argued side-effects are

This is a comparison dumb enough to basically be in bad faith. Ignoring that and focusing on the substance: > "The "improved self-custody" crypto offers is one side of the ledger. The other side is: you lose regulatory pro

There are lots of us that recognize the new capability crypto provides (improved self-custody over assets, currency scarcity not controlled by governments) while also not claiming a new world order. Like most things it's not all or not

I think the majority sided with the move (which is why Ethereum soldiers on and EC is basically useless). It's a good final social check on bad behavior. I think Vitalik as written about this (I'm pretty sure I read about it in on

If AGI is possible, then the described concerns about risk hold up. Either you think AGI is impossible for some reason or you think it is possible, but the goal alignment issues don’t matter. You haven’t given any explanation for either. Ma

Dismissive comments without any substance make you come across as dumb, not smart. If you have some actual position of substance, articulate it or just don’t bother replying at all.

Still a good rate imo - loans are a decent hedge against inflation. Plus you have a place to live without worrying about rent shifts (main risk is if you’re forced to sell for some reason at a bad time). I’m happy we decided to do it.
