Big fan of the place, especially fond of a very nice programmable (perforated cards) loom and a big Foucault pendulum.

A few years ago I deleted the reddit app because I felt I was spending too much time on it. I would then use the web based version when I felt like wasting some time. A month ago I ended up getting the app again because the web version beca

I got my 2015's screen replaced because of Staingate so I get to have a shiny new screen and a computer that's actually usable without 23 dongles. I hope it doesn't die until an actually desirable MBP comes around.

Demos of new products always have golden paths, and even demos of production grade software have golden paths very frequently because maintaining complex software in a demo-able state is hard (i.e. historical reports need to show a plausibl

It's a pretty standard interpretation that the Softbank funds are a vehicle to deploy capital that is otherwise hard to invest (because of political controversy, dubious origins, etc). That's why they can afford to throw cash arou

I routinely find both better routes and prices using Kayak, and it has far more powerful filtering. Mostly intercontinental flights though. I wouldn't be surprised if Google is better tuned to US domestic flights.

I'm not saying the story is implausible, but I dispute the idea that estimating software development efforts is an intractable problem that is better left unattempted.

Oh come on. Any decent project manager understands the difference between an estimate and a deadline and plans and communicates accordingly. It's not rocket science. Stuff gets shipped on time all the time.

The actually desirable feature was for the cable not to fray and disintegrate every 2 years. Making it replaceable at the expense of Magsafe is hardly the solution.

The comment was mostly tongue in cheek. Venezuelan currency has been hyperinflating for a while. So people are used to referencing prices in currencies other than the one used for the actual payment.

The mild fluctuations of the Bitcoin price can look like a walk in the park compared to the Venezuelan local currency.

That's fine as long as you can patent some core innovation and then develop the rest later. There is protectable IP to be shared between collaborators.

Could the essential aspects of a reactor design be patented so that value can be captured despite innovation being created in the open?

Actually research would move in the direction of things whose value can be captured within a year. The patent system shapes the IP industry as whole.
