Do you think you could elaborate on how this works? It seems like a very ergonomic alternative to traditional footnotes.

Interesting project. Unfortunate that its name conflicts with one of nq’s executables ( https://github.com/leahneukirchen/nq ), but I’m not sure anything can be done about it.

…you know that there are more than three operating systems, right…?

None of them should respect IFS — that’s only for the shell.

Is this really your only takeaway? I agree, defining the acronym would be nice, but certainly it’s not infuriating.

Yes, iPhones automatically merge two dashes together as well.

They’re called “em dashes”, and they look like this: — You can find a Real, Genuine Em Dash™ at https://emda.sh , or insert one using ‘C-k - M’ in Vim or ‘Compose - - -’ on Linux — not sure about other platforms.

Hmm, great idea. We could build on Git as a storage medium, and we'd need a durable and reliable way to exchange patches. Something like ...email? $ man -k patches git-am(1) - Apply a series of patches from a mailbox gi

Globs work correctly in Bash (not “BASH”), even with spaces in filenames. Yes, you need to quote most variable substitutions[0], but globs are fine. [0]: except in the RHS of a variable assignment or after the ‘case’ keyword

It’s simple enough to use macos sed here instead of needing gsed: just use ‘-i ''’ instead of ‘-i’.

Would it really be simpler to have 100 lines of GUI setup and tear down, obscuring the most important part (the commands being run)?

Perl is certainly more powerful than sed or awk :)

Which(1) doesn’t necessarily return a non-zero exit code if it can’t find a program. Instead, the portable alternative for scripts is command -v.

It’s not like you can blame POSIX for this — they had to standardize existing behavior.

Honestly, ex mode would be such a good idea … if it didn’t clear the entire goddamn screen when it started up! The whole point of using a line editor is that it shouldn’t take up the entire screen.

POSIX does not specify /usr/bin/env, but the location is pretty much universal anyways.

POSIX does simplify things, diverging from historical practice, when it’s reasonably the only way to standardize stuff that arguably should be standardized. And the vast majority of scripts are easily converted to POSIX-compliant shell scr

Maybe one day you’ll try out OpenBSD and find that you actually like it… and then you’ll be hit by the force of hundreds of thousands of software developers who subscribe to the philosophy you describe above. Standards are important — th

That’s not usually how standards are supposed to work — a POSIX operating system should not reimplement Linux, it should only have to reimplement what’s portable to existing systems.

The standardized tooling is called POSIX, and you already have it installed — it’s easy enough to train the GNUisms out of your fingers and it will reward you in the end.
