This strikes me as a very dumb question. For all the answers to this, simply look at the credit card industry and consumer motivation to spend money they do not have. People want stuff they cannot afford, so they spend money they do not hav

Reading this title is the first time I see someone accused of sharing quotes as trying to be better than someone else. For me a shared quote is a little piece of wisdom (or funny) packed into a few words. The fact that someone read it, like

Agreed. I just see it for what it is: The author is projecting. That's fine, it's fair to project on you own blog.

What kind of clients do you have? If I asked my clients what code repo to use and then asked them to set up a github org, they laugh me out of their building, probably making some sort of comment that I turned my problem into their problem

Your comment's good, it's the children of HN not liking what you said. Nothing to do but move on.

That would be like discontinuing Google Reader and pointing people to Google Docs as an alternative. Apples and oranges.

I got the same revived old entries. Google Reader works, but had a blip yesterday. Mark stuff as read again and move on people. BTW, I read this story on Google Reader, fwiw.

I say screw the existing journals and encourage publishing academic work on new, free journals. There's nothing that says "existing journals must change or we have no other option"

Yeah, could not find a better term at the time, sorry... But yeah, It's all subjective. I think though, that setting a time limit as the first thing in the call is far better than saying "I must go in two minutes" in the middle of a call.

IMO, saying "I do not communicate that way, sorry" on an initial contact request is a little douchebaggy (key sentence is "on an initial contact"). I much rather prefer: "I'll make time for a quick phone call, but I only have X minutes for

This is not really about how to stop spam, as much as it is a bite-sized statement that we should analyze behavior to tell bots apart from real users.

HN's signal to noise ratio is dropping fast. Pretty soon the time taken to filter out the useful stuff will make reading HN not worthwhile. It is what it is, though. I guess it's what happens when you let people submit stuff without moderat

If you understand what VAT is and how it works, then you realize it's not the company paying the tax, it's the ultimate consumer (British consumers in this case).

Agreed. Not sure why people see a problem with this simple principle. It's not like they would be ok with Comcast saying "We're having cash flow issues, so we took the liberty of charging you double this month"

LOL, you assume too much. On both your paragraphs. Not interested in a pissing match though. Keep your $40 or spend it; makes no difference.

DOS batch file programming reference and tutorials? Joke. Anyway, you would do anything with it. It's generic enough.

Gotta love these bloggers trying to make a story where there is none. It's a new UI. It takes some getting used to. Deal with it. It's not a train wreck.

Dude, you are missing completely the point. There's a vast difference between automatically dealing with spam in Twitter and shutting down a paying customer with legitimate (non-drone account) followers. And this is not about spam, it's ab

At the end of the day critics are a dime a dozen. This is not the forum nor do I have the time nor do I care enough to argue, so I won't bother to poke holes in your logic.

Personal army type of stuff? And yeah "Deny reality" is simply link bait. Everyone claims they have reality on their side. That's why lawyers exist, and so on. Not much news here, IMO, just one more lawsuit where both sides allege they have

Agreed. In this day and age it's just asinine to expect privacy from the Internet, no matter what you are promised. There is not privacy and I do not expect any. That's the way to be happy and care free on the Internet. It's simple: Don't
