Same here. My mother always used to have TV on as a background when I was a kid, but I never had one after I moved out. Now TV a running TV completely destroys my ability to concentrate on anything else and I am also utterly disgusted by al

I would sooo love to have my free speech violated the way Joe does: having episodes of talk show I was hired to do for 100 million dollars removed. In fact, I can deal with bunch more free speech violations if I getting enough money that I

Yes. They have the power to push whatever they want on captive audience (engineers forced to work with MS stack). That means they don't need to care whether what they're pushing is actually good. So it mostly isn't.

I'm on a similar boat. I really really like the idea of this stack. You are going to have the pains of a database (migrations and scaling) anyway, all your data is in a database, so why not put everything there, right? And lot of busin

Dbt is for analytics. It expects you to have some "raw data" and then building bunch of models and reports off of it. I do think dbt is the answer for most of analytics, but for CRUD stuff with business logic it's not going

I like the idea of using CDC for data pulls, but there are some issues with it. 1/ On the target, you have to do compaction, deduplication, whatever you call the reconstruction of "latest state" as that's usually what pe

I didn't know they were actively standing behind Rogan - I kind of expected they signed him on before he went completely off the deep end and are now just keeping up the status quo. I will go cancel my Spotify subscription now.

At the same time, I assume Americans would love to have 20 days of PTO, and not be afraid they end up in debt over disease or die because they can't afford insulin.

Not sure about webapps but in analytics, this is a common practice. Real data has too many exceptions and edge cases. If you dont develop and test with real data, you will end up effectively developing or testing on production.

This is cool! I love it. Few notes: 1) SQL also allows you to define windowing reusably, like this select sum(blah) over window_abc, avg(blah) over window_abc from table_xyz window window_abc as (partition by x

Sadly, the manufacturers (Bosch, mostly) managed to convince various governments that the proprietary batteries with DRM are there to prevent tampering and this safety. So I'm not sure if it's going away.

I played with the website and it feels really nice. My guess is that this was web people who were contracted to build a read-only daily updated dashboard instead of interactive web app so they treated it as another web app, just scaled up.

I skimmed the article and it seems interesting. On the data side, they have ~7.5 billion total records and they add in 55 million new a day. On the web side, they have ~1 million daily unique users and 100k concurrent users at peak ("c

I think that depends on your target and especially scope. ClickHouse demonstrates this well - it is incredibly fast and powerful, but also very limited. It has its own dialect of SQL incompatible with anything else. It doesn't even hav

Yes, and credit where credit's due, with Redshift Amazon changed analytics industry forever and they changed whole IT space forever with S3. But since then, there's not much innovation in analytics space from them, is there?

Snowflake is technically far superior to Redshift. The performance and features are somewhere else. Even if you pay more in operating cost (which is not always the case, especially if you count Redshift DBA salary), you get to do what you a

Honestly, it should be. AWS is much better at the dumb, commodity services like s3, ec2 and rds (that are actually pretty smart) than they are at something like redshift, sagemaker or similar.

NAS with SSD can go way faster than the ~ 120 MB/s 1GbE can offer. For NAS with HDD, the benefit is not as big but still there. Also, the main competition is WiFi which is significantly slower than 1GbE in most cases.
