That's not true at all, or not anymore after iOS 4, at least. (to be fair, lots of Androids don't need rooting at all, too) In fact, it's quite the opposite of what rooting is intended to do in the context of this article , which is puttin

A local (Brazilian) phone operator made 'we only have unlocked phones' as their selling-point. Also they don't have contracts, and (at least for me) no crapware apps. Sorta gives me a bit of hope on capitalism. I stay with them on principle

Yeah... Redis could probably use a subset of SQL, though, but I don't know if it would be practical.

I might get some down votes for that, but I really wonder when people will realize that Google is just a company, not a religion of sorts. (same applies to everyone else btw)

there's no particularly interesting ideas in it I sorta agree. I particularly would like to see operating systems implemented using JIT compilation and software isolation. Managed code running safely on the ring0 of the processor. Microso

Hotmail is #1 result for me when you search for "e-mail". :-) http://f.cl.ly/items/1X081Z0a2P1E2y2J3U0Y/email.png (Gmail is still #1 for "mail" though, probably because of their URL - mail.google.com)

Same here! But I remember using Altavista for a long time after switching to Google because of Babelfish (translator0 and Image Search (was it Altavista?) Today I use DuckDuckGo a lot.

And it's a cool thing. I hope Apple learns their lesson too, with articles like this. My guess is that, in both cases (Honeycomb and FaceTime), it was more a problem of corporate inertia or laziness rather than evil.

A second HD in place of the optical drive? I never thought it was possible. Sounds like a plan for my recording rig: the SSD plus a bigger mechanical drive.

I've been hearing this for a couple years, and I even had some people mistakenly telling me they don't get a MacBook because they think it only runs Apple-approved software. I don't really think it's gonna happen. "It runs Windows" is a maj

I remember vaguely... The first iMac was released in 1997, I think?, and the outcry was because they dropped not only the floppy but also parallel and serial ports. Some people called it "a toy".

What I did: go to Stack Overflow, pick the most popular question of the month and search on Google. Lots of 'mirrors' will appear (probably not on the first page) and you can use your judgement.

The opposite is true for me too. I've had an Enterprise Java guy telling me once that "programming and Object Orientation got lost with those simpler, easy-to-use language and frameworks", referring to Ruby and Rails. I dunno about that. Al

I started with Erlang, to pick up the basics of functional style, and then tried Haskell. It was a breeze, but I alreadt had C#+LINQ and Ruby experience.

If you are working on an application on the left monitor and need to access a menu item you have to mouse all the way over to the middle monitor and then back. If you're using it more than 10 times a day you shoud make a custom keyboard s

That's what I've heard too. Also, according to this article, 70% of the laptops run OS X and 30% run Ubuntu. Most desktops are Linux, though. http://digitizor.com/2011/07/12/google-android-linux-dream/ and http://news.ycombinator.com/ite

It's a great idea. Having the OS run on a ROM directly would make things easier... For me, the worst part of writing an OS to x86 is that you have to start with a bootloader, a primitive filesystem, change CPU modes... all that before you g

Actually, words like 'bitch' and 'ho' ('whore') are very common gender slurs among some groups, unlike 'bastard' or 'asshole', so it's hard to find a 'reverse' situation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitch_(insult)#Hip_hop_culture

I don't know about FSW, but there are some Googlers working with OStatus. And Google created PubSubHubbub, which is one of the core parts of the specification. Btw, omg, I just checked and Google+ is already sorta-compatible with OStatus in

If you just want to practice programming, a Blog is a great idea, as invertedlambda suggested! You can also try cloning sites you like, such as Twitter, Facebook, Hacker News. Or maybe a text-mode game. Anything that you might think is cool

A personal example. Just when I started college, was trying to write a 3D game in C++ (I was young, so yeah, I thought it was just C with classes, LOL). Since I had no idea about design patterns, so I made a singleton called "Rendering Mana

YMMV, but the way I prefer doing it is by telling the settings explicitly to the different classes, instead of having all those classes rely on getting it by themselves from the singleton (this is where the problem lies). You can pass the s

What's wrong with having a 5% market share? Safari is good, and so is Opera. Both are great when it comes to compliance to standards (Somebody correct me if I'm mistaken), and are pushing the envelope as much as the three big players. Also,
