IMO, significant whitespace shines when used along with a proper editor. Also, even without an editor, the cleanliness pays off. And you would indent properly anyway...

If I recall correctly, Google switched their crawler from Python to C++ for performance and for library compatibility etc. And eBay moved the whole website from C++ to Java in 2002. IMO, the problem is that Twitter was Ruby's poster while b

I've said it before and got a lot of downvotes, but one company controlling everything doesn't really pose a problem to the open web or to users privacy, but instead to other companies, to smaller startups, small entrepreneurs, free market

I think most developers don't see that as a problem. We modify the response all the time based on headers like User-Agent, Referer, If-Unmodified-Since, Accept-Language and others, so using Accept for versioning isn't really that strange.

Oh, I agree with you. Google will pose no problems to other big players or end users. But the bigger they are, the worse it is for everyone. Mr. Timr, the poster above me, put it much better than I ever could, so I'll just quote him: "When

I completely agree with you. Google already rules in search, phones, and now our social life. With Chromebooks they will get a bigger chunk of it. They have ten times more potential for evil than Microsoft ever dreamed of having in the nine

Bonus points for recommending a Linux environment. Everyone should learn sysadmin basics. It's not hard, and in the long run it can be handy, especially in startups with small teams.

I've seen news about child porn allegations in the UK that usually lead to nowhere in the latest years, mostly because of some credit card issues. I remember it happening with Pete Townshend (from The Who) and Robert Del Naja (from Massive

Also, "Upon the launch of the iPhone 4, Jobs promised that Apple would work in due course with standards bodies to make the FaceTime protocol an open standard." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facetime ) I wonder when (or if) it will happen.

Just a disclaimer: I have zero work experience with PHP, just personal experience. I put it inside quotation marks because it's not the true-reflection API per se, but I believe it was a mistake to even bring that up, and to generalize by s

That's why I put the word reflection inside quotes, I wasn't talking about the proper reflection API, but about functions like get_class_methods, and stuff like $$. Here's an example similar to yours: $a = new A; foreach(get_objec

I believe that this (ideas thrown around) is the truth, Rasmus Lerdorf comes across as a very pragmatic developer who's more interested in getting things done rather than being an architectural perfectionist. But I'm not saying that in a de

Yes, but I think you missed the point... I was talking about how the Unreal Engine uses a third-party development environment, makes portable content but some of their games are huge success cases on iOS. Basically I was replying to this:

Maybe we don't want a filter that sucks, plain and simple? Whether the filter sucks or not is completely subjective, but it sucks for me, so there. Changing the language not that intuitive in Google, it's a drag. I have to do it all the tim

Nice write up. Apparently the consensus is that Erlang is amazing for 'lower-level' infrastructure code but not so great for high-level business code. I wonder if Reia and Elxir might play a role in changing that...

Regulation would be okay... maybe something forbidding the storage of plain-text passwords, special instructions for hashing, a special protocol for (not) storing credit card numbers... Like a security 101...

Honest question: the reason for such redundancy and overlap is because different Google teams want/have independence, because they can't communicate with each other and reach an agreement, or because they're afraid to piss off users with ra

Exactly. LulzSec on the other hand would probably be the ones breaking into the dentists office and drawing a penis on the patients face with black marker, just to wait for them to wake up and laugh at them. :)

I believe that "learned" means "learned enough to work professionally with". Deep knowledge of a language is always very desired, but on the real world very few programmers have it, or even need it. (Not to mention that "deep knowledge" i
