This is a brilliant and cheap political win for Obama. Consider the economic black hole our government (including the past administration) is leading us down; he can leave alone (or even reduce) the number of dollars spent on research and

Your rant appears to be based, at least in part, on the assumption that massive social structures are in some way necessary and beneficial to the lives their constituents.

I know you're not just trolling, because you contribute many insightful comments on HN, but I just don't see why you are so focused on headcount as the measure of business growth. The low marginal cost of additional customers in a subscript

The comment you responded to was actually quite accurate in it's description of what's been happening in the United States for quite some time. Each industry has taken it's turn at the chopping block and been hollowed out to a shell of it'

I think the blog makes an interesting point, though the author seems to frame justice differently than I might; as "the thing that benefits <my group>", whereas I think Rawls ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rawls ) would frame j

I use ajax POSTs for autosaves, creating and deleting 'child' objects (when the UI for the sub-object should be added to/removed from the page without a reload). Basically any mutation where I don't want a reload.

I see where you are coming from now, and I appreciate that you took the time to explain so thoroughly. I guess I was not aware that it was discretionary to the jailers; with that in mind I can see how it could be used as a weapon, a tormen

I chose the word 'should' intentionally; the existence of solitary confinement as punishment is evidence of the failure of a small fraction of the population to be deterred from certain crimes by the prospect of complete separation from soc

If what you say is true, and Goldman hedged their hedge by purchasing CDS on AIG and/or outright shorting them, it should be trivial for a prosecutor to show that they entered a contract with AIG knowing fully that it could never be satisfi

The point he's making is salient enough if you've worked with sensor networks, specifically if you're trying to track physical objects and predict what it will do next. You run up against a sort of computational corollary to Nyquist-Shanno

Ugh...great article about the reality of workplace communications, but I think it needs to be underlined. From what I've seen, remote is a function of the whole team -- not just 'does this guy depend on the Pond' but 'does the rest of the t
