I started hitting the Space bar to scroll down (like I always do) and was less than impressed. Only after using the inconvenient and overly subtle nav buttons on the right was I able to see why it was slightly interesting. But finding and u

Isn't it conceivable that the next social network will start as a place for the younguns to get away from their parents? If you were 15, would you rather be at a party with all your friends and everyone's parents and grandparents and aunts

Possibly, but just saying "communication" doesn't get across the fact that designers are always working within a myriad of constraints.

I would say design is about problem solving more than straight communication. Here's a great talk from Michael Bierut that kind of touches on what a designer is: http://the99percent.com/videos/6056/michael-bierut-5-secrets...

"Anathem" by Neal Stephenson is the best book I've read in years. The first 50 pages or so are a slog, but after that I couldn't put it down. "What is the What" by Dave Eggers is also phenomenal.

I agree. The photo on that page serves the same function as white space. It also helps the page feel less like a wall of text and more easily digestible. Plus, one can get the gist of the image without ever actually focusing on it.

Awesome. Only comment I have is that some way to tell how many images there are and where you are in the sequence would be useful.

Agree completely. The author is getting dangerously close to hypocritical by berating CSSers in the way he hates being berated by them. For me, (mostly) pure CSS is always faster in the long run, but I would never tell another person how to

I had to check the URL to make sure it didn't end in /thisisajoke. I guess if you got rid of the illustration banner it wouldn't be that bad. Whose idea was it to use My Chemical Romance to market jQuery?

I actually blanked that out, too. I think it's because it's the same size/placement as a standard ad. It's easily ignorable.

I'm fairly forgiving of typos in blog posts, but to use the wrong product name in the first sentence, about 75 pixels away from the correct product name in the title, is a little too much.

Exactly. Many people aren't choosing to still use IE6 - the choice is being made for them. I work onsite in a non-profit sometimes, and they are all still on IE6 until the IT dept decides it's safe/worth it to upgrade. (EDIT: And I do my pa

Thanks for clarifying. I just think that a valid case for the shortcomings of CSS can be made without even mentioning tables. And to be honest, now that I really know CSS, it is easier than tables. Tables might be easier when you're dealing

Great points. I always cringe when I read a "CSS is awful!" article that even mentions table-based layout. The mere thought of going back to building (and more importantly, MAINTAINING) sites with nested tables makes me want to become a far
