Sticking to LTS releases was actually the worst way to do this as it meant catching 10.04 which was effectively a "one off" UI, resulting in two changes to the UI rather than one big overhaul. My mother started off on 8.04 LTS. Wh

I gave up on Ubuntu when I could no longer have faith that my environment would be recognisable from one release to the next. For me, and my mother, that's a very important part of "just works".

At least the Ubuntu VM can be password protected and encrypted, unlike OS X in this scenario, or am I missing some other issue? Using a VM as the "real" machine seems to be at least as effective as any other suggestion made here a

I frequently see people talking about an unqualified "100% test coverage". Is it safe to assume in these cases that the author is referring to statement coverage[1] rather than something more stringent like decision coverage or ev

For Haskell you're absolutely right however I was responding to the OPs comment that controlling effects in general is over the top. The issue of composing effects, along with the widespread fear of monads, are enough for me to conclud

Effect inference has already been done: http://research.microsoft.com/apps/mobile/showpage.aspx?page... I doubt we'll see anything like this in a mainstream language anytime soon.

Using the mechanic employed by the scala plugin I linked to[1], dofib would be annotated with pure(argumentProvider). dofib itself is pure however, at each call site, it has the effect of its argument for that call. This is consistent with

I don't agree that managing effects is over the top per se however the use of monads feels over the top for pretty much everything! It's always struck me as strange that value (as in a typical type system) and effects would be con

Solving this surely requires explicit support for testing at the language level, eg. a "private testable" scope.

I'd recommend seeing a podiatrist anyway[1]. I've known about my alignment issues for years - mega tight hamstrings and weak gluteals so I got my first pair of (corrective) running shoes from a local, reputable, running shop[2] af

Most people I regularly spend time with are aware that I'm bipolar even if they aren't in the "been there" category. This is quite deliberate. When I'm well, I do my best to explain the difficulties I have during an episode to try and avoid

For me this depends very much on who it is that's trying to help. If they've not experienced something similar to the mental health problems I'm suffering from it's usually best if they treat me as normal. The effort required to try and exp

Thanks very much for posting those links, I too am bipolar. Unfortunately I'll have to put off checking them out properly until another time. Until last December I'd been stable for around 5 years. Now I'm putting together an account of my
