Here's some feedback: 1. Your logo is extremely similar to Buffer. Buffer won't sue you b/c Joel's a nice guy (on Twitter at least), but Buffer has a huge amount of traction, to the point where I thought your logo was a

I think it would be fair to say that Wolfenstein would qualify as a relatively small system in Haskell. Haskell's own compiler, GHC is a highly complex system and one of the most sophisticated compilers in existence. The source is free

I don't know if anyone remembers the game MayaQuest, but it was one of my favorite Mac games and I dreamed of exploring the Mayan ruins on a bicycle for years. If drones had existed back then, I think this would have been my dream job.

I'm glad to see more classes like this come online. I think its a bit of a shame that the material (of the book) focuses so much on Java, however. The algorithms classes I took in college focused a lot on math, logic and proofs. It too

Pelican, Specter, Silvrback...I'm starting to get really confused. Is building your own blogging engine the new rite of passage for the web age, supplanting the practice of building your own text editor? Is it okay if I keep writing po

Hashed _id's aren't the bottleneck. Disks are the bottleneck. MongoDB is seriously lacking in the compression department and bogs down our disks constantly. Riak is not slow as long as you're not running your cluster on VPSs.

We had some major issues using MongoDB for time series data due to the write volume (real time sensor data). The solution for us was Riak, mainly because we never need to update a vector clock, leaving us without the need for conflict resol

If that was the only thing that mattered, how do some consultants make 3x others, with exactly the same performance or worse? While the people who pay the bills think that's the only thing that matters, your ability to confidently mark

I don't think you can die from overwork at that age. This is, frankly, nothing compared to some of the long hours we worked in project groups at Georgia Tech from CS class final projects. It's more likely that he had an unknown co

When I was young I always daydreamed about being a programmer/hacker in a dystopian cyberpunk future. I don't know whether or not I should be alarmed that my daydreams and reality are converging.

Carmack's aside about his 7 year old son learning to program brings up an interesting idea: What would happen if you taught a 7 year old to program with Haskell. I don't have any children, but I started programming at 7 so at the
