"global variables in C are initialized to zero implicitly" NULL pointers will lead to a crash. It would be more interesting to have it as a random pointer, which could do quite anything.

The process (for SPDY and nginx) is called disemvowelment[1], and I always thought it mostly had to do with securing short domain names. Scvngr comes to mind as an example of this. S-C-A-V-E-N-G-E-R. [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dise

Tried to find where you pulled this number. This study seems in-line with your hypothesis (it states a gain over HTTPS, and a loss over HTTP): http://www.guypo.com/technical/not-as-spdy-as-you-thought/

For fun: a quick way to grab the crapchas on the page (that aren't protected by cross-origin) $('.crapcha').each(function() { console.log(['Crapcha', $.map($(this).find('span'), function(letter) { return $(lett

I assume it would fall under commentary[1], esp. as it's one a single image and it has literally been written over to show the material that the comment is referencing. [1] http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/...

Aren't DMCA takedowns required, under penalty of perjury, to assert a non-frivolous copyright claim? Is there any recourse for what appears to be clear abuses of the DMCA?

My concern is that you're calling someone a "dick" on a public forum. I believe that's unfounded and unnecessary. Dave is actually a very nice and caring person when you meet and talk to him, his public persona be as it may.

That's ad hominem and unnecessary and downright offensive. You should judge Dave McClure on his acts as an investor or advisor. HackerNews is meant to be a constructive forum, and this comment was anything but.

Yes, and it was difficult to figure out what to put after "American" and "United States" both turned up no results, but agree auto-fill would make this an easy go-to for visa information.

The title here is misleading. They are "ceasing trading activity" ... "as we do all we can to resume operations as promptly as possible." The statement alludes to "financial irregularities" which are being investigated.

Off topic: I wanted to read the court doc at the end of the article, but it was nigh impossible[1] because the page uses only 728px out of the available 1278px width on the content. Reading articles on TheNextWeb feels as comfortable as ri

The issue here isn't with Facebook privacy. If I guess (or you tell me) your bank's online login information, does that give me the right to log-in to your account and start mucking with things? Facebook has an API to access your account

Looks really interesting. Do you have a live demo, possibly with public-domain music? Would love to try it out without yet building it on a server.

Sure, but as with all things, it could be turned off. The more I think about it, the more I like this idea. I may as well try it out and mock up a pull request.

As there have been many exploits / issues recently realized in parameters parsing, why isn't there more of a focus on security here? Specifically, this is where users/hackers can put ANY DARN THING THEY WANT and your server has to deal w

The worst for me was a site (forget which one) which asked me to download the app, and then redirected me to their homepage when I declined (as opposed to the article I was trying to read). That was an unfortunate user experience.
