I see many people in this thread debating (1) whether Sunde is some sort of freedom fighter, and (2) the ethics of intellectual property law. In my interpretation Sunde is mainly arguing that people who are criticizing him for not defending

Excellent idea. For journalists - or just for citizens who happen to be standing around in the wrong place at the right time.

Same, about the file hierarchy. Makes the most sense to me. If VLC had a file browser panel, my OSX audio life would feel complete. You know what I really love though in the meantime? MOC on Linux.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I can appreciate the difficulties of hypothesizing, and I hadn't thought about it (at least directly) from a moral standpoint. It's still difficult for me to believe that in a totally free marke

No offense, but this seems specious because it presumes that a majority of consumers are making a rational choice from a well-informed position, which is not necessarily the case. They're currently making the trade, yes, but that does

Not sure why this was downvoted, I kind of agree. We're supposed to be defending rational choices made by informed consumers, but I too question whether current regulation adequately safeguards either one of those principles.

I guess I was thinking of the abstract question of how someone would convincingly argue that the plight of new parents would be better off in general with no government regulation at all. I agree that the FMLA is grossly inadequate, but not

Genuinely curious - where are the markets-should-be-completely-unregulated guys on this?

I sympathize with anyone who doesn't have the technical knowledge to know whether a given ad is benign or malignant, or even what the real differences are between the two. For that crowd, the unregulated ad-based market (the web) can f

I'm both an beginner with html and css, and a subscriber to the Economist. As an exercise, does anyone have any idea whether there's anything in this page's markup that I can edit in Firefox's console to reveal the text?

The financial costs a young artist or group incurs to bring one or a few albums into the world are slim, but the cost in time is great, especially if they're also trying to keep food in their bellies by touring. But here's the thi

I have both of those problems too. I find it an effective remedy to use a pencil to asterisk thought-provoking passages in the margin. It helps me focus on each sentence as potentially noteworthy, but when I note one, it also helps me let i

I have that problem too. I usually narrow it down to two or three options and ask the server/cashier what I want. About 80% of the time I go with whatever s/he says; other times, simply hearing his/her recommendation makes me

I hoped my French would be up to Proust, but sadly it wasn't, and I didn't want re-learning French to be an impediment to the enjoyment of the story. So I've read the Enright versions.
