I disagree with this way of assessing things. Most big tech companies have been investing to diversify their income sources. Whether those investments have had a massive return to take over their original cash cow is a separate concern. Goo

I agree. If the outcome is a win for both Microsoft (or any other entity for that matter) and the rest of the ecosystem that's perfect. But they have shown that as a corporation they are comfortable playing nasty when it suits them.

Lobbying is like the prisoner's dilemma. If you don't do it but your rival does then you'll end up with these extortion laws that hands Murdoch free money as we saw in Australia

Some pretend Microsoft has turned into this benevolent corporation lately with their "Microsoft <heart> Linux" and adopting Android and Chrome. Well all those were done because they'd lost market share in servers, mobi

From what I've heard the problem is still the same promo culture. When people see their peers getting promoted and earning more money by showing "leadership" and "launch"ing some new project vs. optimizing for end u

Being good at math and physics for example doesn't make you good at HCI. I learned this by being forced to take an HCI course in grad school and learning how much I didn't know about the area. Another problem is again wrong incent

I agree with your action. Letting more curious and fresh comments get buried under the more predictable and repetitive ones would be a disservice to the site visitors.

This is the same as centralized app stores where the only difference is that here you do have an alternative.

The problem I see mainly is people complain about something without providing a usable alternative. Most of the web tech are open source so it's just a matter of forking an existing tech and convincing others to use your thing instead.

"Culturally relevant curricula and practices designed to increase access for students of color". Wait what? What is "of color"? Why are there a bunch of photos of sad black kids. This was as dumb as it can get.

Disclaimer: I'm no historian. But my guess is it's often not a simple cause. This is a lot like how, say, tech companies evolve. For example is there a simple answer to why, say, HP isn't considered the most successful tech c

It would be a nice exercise but relying on it doesn't make sense to me. We had to write a text editor in our first semester of our CS undergrad program. I'm not going to use my own text editor in favor of say MS word or Google doc

No, the way incognito works is as if you are using a throw away device. If the website measures what pages in the website you visited it doesn't make such incognito "mask" any more transparent. It'd be similar to the cct

If you wear a mask to be anonymous when you enter a shop do you find it "galling" if the cctv still records your entrance or did you expect to become invisible suddenly?

Next: Judge disturbed by the fact that Verizon still sees what number you called when you use a throw away phone. I don't get why on HN such clickbait articles get upvoted to the front page.
