Also, a very big danger with non-FOSS analytics and ad services is that they are all, in effect metadata for governments to sweep up. It's much easier to log a bunch of Google Analytics requests than to log someone's entire Intern

I've often wondered if an ad blocker more like an anti-virus heuristic system could be created. It would look for suspicious looking JS and block it, as well as ban any code which auto-plays video or fullscreens. Add some machine learn

There are good alternatives to Google Analytics that are FOSS and allow you to self-host. Piwik is excellent and simple, and SnowPlow is very powerful if not user-friendly. Server logs are pretty unreliable, and don't give nearly the d

I guarantee job offers and a gofundme legal defense would be offered to any dissenting employees insanely quickly on this issue. If Tim Cook was really upset he could start a new company called "Screw the FBI LLC" which coincident

Aren't there some viruses which do more damage on reboot? And removing power could remove forensic information, if the virus was loaded exclusively in RAM. I think air-gapping would have been a wise move, but I would have kept the serv

To be fair, she said that as her final line whilst being fired. I certainly would have no sympathy for someone complaining about getting fired for saying that line, but if you are already on the way out and have been treated poorly...

Ah, OK. For some reason I had the mental image of a bunch of inexpensive ships which would surely sink if they got hit at high velocity. It's pretty incredible, given how large the rockets are, that the ship dwarfs them, but recalling

It's easy to see how the tech improvements we have had since 2005 are not economical technological improvements. For example, by 2005 (when the slowdown in Labor productivity began) most of the benefit of computers for most everywhere

The concept of shutting down data centers by shutting off water at a local level is both amusing and probably more practical than reform by Congress.

There is a point where having strong opinions results in so much bickering that nothing gets done. Part of doing something the right way is reserving arguments for when they matter. The solution is to have strong opinions, weakly held.

In this world of quant-bots, I don't know how anyone can argue that we have a fully rational market. My understanding is that much of the progress in economics has been merging economics with psychology to identify rational failures.

I agree with this viewpoint, though I think it's also possible that a lone actor, frustrated with Obamacare, acted out using the only tools he knew in a 1/2 hour. It wouldn't surprise me if healthcare.gov was very vulnerable
