Thanks, both — I had seen this shared in the past but finally clicked through. Pretty neat site, beyond even just the solar-powered website factor.

In-season, local fruit, is a million times better anyway. We’ve traded taste for shelf-appearance and the ability for fruit to travel from New Zealand to California. If people really want strawberries in January (and as a parent of young pi

When the 40 hour workweek was first proposed, doomsayers said it would be the end of the American economy. The opposite happened, and as injuries and illness decreased, productivity increased. [1] Something to keep in mind, as it’s counteri

Attenborough’s recent film “Our Planet” had an episode dedicated to Palm Oil monocultures and the displaced and dying orangutan. Heartbreaking. Good series if you haven’t seen it.

Sad news; total legend. folklore.org has a lot of stories featuring Larry — short stories on an era of computing that has faded around the edges. RIP.

The endless configuration pain you mention pretty perfectly describes anytime I try to dip into a modern framework and find myself spending hours and hours updating ruby or python or some random node module until all the dependencies finall

Barrier to entry has completely changed. A dark room wasn’t something most people had access to. Photoshop required money, time, and skill. We’re entering an era of radically different scale where anyone will be able to manipulate imagery.

To add to this, even if someone knows a video is fake, if it’s realistic enough then the image will persist. But perhaps the most damaging aspect of all this is the erosion of truth, in people’s general feeling that nothing can be trust

I hear this fit and finish critique of Tesla often. But the whole package of a Tesla is clearly compelling to people, who are willing to pay a luxury price for it. High end Volvo’s are a good example of old-school quality — gorgeous interio

I’ve been exploring this space and find myself thinking of Andy Warhol. I would definitely consider him an artist. A great one even. But his work was quite different from Picasso. Warhol had a factory. His silkscreens were often done by ass

Such a beautiful game. I recently checked out the book “SNES Omnibus” from the library and it provided for some nice nostalgia: https://venturebeat.com/2018/08/01/the-retrobeat-the-snes-om...

Learning the basics has its place. People have to start somewhere. A tutorial for more complex, real world problems is a totally different thing. Both are interesting in their own ways.

Lee Smolin’s book, “Einstein’s Unfinished Revolution” is largely about particle/wave duality and an alternate theory that never caught on: the Pilot Wave theory. It’s a Realist alternative to the Anti-Realist school of Heisenberg, etc.
