You an other comments seem to only balance cost and time lost, but doing your own curtains, for many people, is also fun, rewarding, interesting, and a very good way to change focus from professional or personal issues.

Fair enough, but then what we want is readability, which is related but not equivalent to conciseness. I often have discussions with colleagues about different coding idioms in Python, and I hear often "this one is better because it is less

The more I think about it the more I believe concision is overrated and borderline dangerous. Shaving a few keystroke today very often means great troubles later. I used to like those hello world concision contests, but in fact wh

I think it is not too unzen in its aim and method but if you ask there many little tricks that I'd say are unzen. First, give all the code a pass of autopep8 comb. Second, avoid things like "lambda (op,num): (num, -num)[...], just u

I shared these worries but we parents really need to get over it. It is actually dangerous for kids to have worrying parents. Kids need to build self-confidence, mostly copying yours. So here are some tips that helped me and my wife to

"Brilliant marketing play" Maybe, but where the idealism gone? Both on HN, in tech circles, and, yes, at Google, there was some healthy dose of idealism. You know, this thing that make people do thing for something else than money, for the

I hope they carefully ponder the coding convention they use in the examples, because so many people will reproduce them. For instance I don't love the ( parens spacing ), is there a good reason for these added spaces?

Exactly. Moreover, every nation is also denying it. Some reports make fun of China because they deny something that seem obvious, but this is no China specialty. Just another aspect of anti China sentiment, that's all.

I used a similar technique for a less frivolous task. I had script dumping data in text format, and wanted to refactor it. I committed the result and could refactor brutally step by step, running the script at each step and reve

To me using income as social scale is insane. It would give a very high position to cartel bosses, and these guys should be on the bottom. If you'd need a social scale for some l practical reason, I suppose the only workable one is

This is not what I remember. I even have a printout of the full prototype doc hidden somewhere, it had clean and straightforward explanations for all the API. Scriptaculous, built upon prototype.js, was nice too.

I see also what you mean, but this might apply more to programming or physics than to math. Being completely "useless" is a feature, not a bug, for math (and poetry, music, metaphysics, astronomy). Pure speculation or useless braingames is

I can confirm this from my experience in China (~9 years), but would be a little more positive on the outcome for the graduates. It is still relatively easy to find a job and turn-over is high. In the companies where I have worked, in the u

When we say bug, I guess we just mean "avoidable issue" of a relatively modest importance, but that can have big impact, right? Then, if you learn singing or violin, and you are "tone-deaf" or near tone-deaf, then it is not a bug, it is an
