That's an interesting way of putting it, I hadn't really thought about it that way before. Most of the projects I work on use transitions extensively in their interfaces mainly for the aesthetic value but I hadn't considered the potential u

You're incredibly lucky, I usually have to restart Flash a few times a day and actually I spend more time in coding in Eclipse/FDT than using Flash itself. It crashes occasionally after publishing or test-movieing, but far worse is as soon

Exactly. I'm an "interaction designer", basically a combination of the two; I design and code the UI. Often there is someone directing the overall UX, but the nitty gritty specifics of the UI functionality are my department.

You can still do it, and without a Y combinator or anything like that too: var ninja = { yell: function () { var yellLocal = function(n) { return n > 0 ? yellLocal(n-1) + "a" : "hiy"; } return yellLocal; }()

Wow, that's really interesting, I never realised that's where "Ye" came from. I suppose a similar thing happened with yogh (ȝ) - instead of being replaced with something less ambiguous it became z in some cases, but is still pronounced the

Interesting article. There was an something on the BBC News website a while back with two sides of a similar argument, only one side was written in a style that was supposed to be easier to read; it certainly wasn't for me as it was written

Ah, okay. I usually use the second argument of beginFill for specifying the alpha. Flash has quite a few quirks with Number vs int vs uint (it tends to switch types internally) so it could well be something to do with that. In fact, 0xFFFFF

Can you explain a bit more what you mean about drawing white shapes? I've never had a problem: graphics.beginFill(0xFFFFFF); graphics.drawRect(10, 10, 100, 100); graphics.endFill();

I have about 16k and it's almost unusable. From what I hear the PC version performance is much worse than the Mac version though.

I don't think AS3 and JS will merge anymore, the ES4 proposal was ditched in favour of continued evolution of ES3.1. As an aside, I'm not sure what the article was talking about with those examples that are "not possible" in Flash, as I see

I don't think the article is directed at people worrying about their own BMI, but when it is used by say, adoption agencies or insurance companies, etc. I seem to remember a case here in the UK where a couple weren't allowed to adopt becaus

Mindfulness isn't really flow, as it basically means paying attention to what's going on in the current moment - a more general awareness of what's going on with your thinking, body, and surroundings. To concentrate on an abstract object is

That's good to know, when my 160GB eventually dies I don't want to start leaving stuff off my iPod. Only have about 15k tracks on it, but that still uses 130GB. I use it as a portable HDD sometimes so it's always nice to have more space for

I'm not sure if there's much truth to it, but I read that the BBC news headlines are so short as there is some central system that provides them to Ceefax too (which can only display 24 rows of 40 characters). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

There's a Reaktor ensemble based on Life: http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=r5library&... (see "NEWSCOOL") It doesn't sound too great actually, or at least it's quite obvious to the ear once you've heard it being used once

It's not always possible in Flash, as SWFs published for newer players are sometimes completely incompatible with older versions of the player - usually it's done with JS on the page it's embedded on. Besides, this is just an experiment - I

Clean and creative aren't mutually exclusive though. It's perhaps too obvious an example, but Apple's design is on the whole pretty clean - and to my eyes at least looks like a lot more care was given to it. One of my main problem's with Go

This is how Quake Live works too - after a small download you enter a 10 minute warmup/skill-determining match against a bot, the rest of the maps carry on downloading while you play. In my case everything had finished downloading by the ti

As others have mentioned, you don't strictly need that much maths to be a programmer - and almost none for web development, for instance. It does depend a lot on what you do. I'm an interactive designer, and certainly not a good mathematici

I was on CompuServe back then (95 or 96 anyway), at the time I never even opened the web browser - my time online was spent in the CompuServe app looking at the board/chatroom/portal type things that it used to serve. Strangely I can still
