I don't disagree at all with what you say above, and I do not think it's inevitable that fusion reactors will be useful in the foreseeable future. You are right that "You can't use simple-minded heuristics either way&quo

Maybe only somewhat relevant, but the title phrase resonated with me. Given my ADHD, desperation-induced focus was the only thing that got me through college with good grades. I wouldn't study until the night before the big exam becaus

Not true at all for me, because in my situation there are some functions which have tight loops that take 99% or more of the execution time. Put the numba decorator in front of them and the code is 100+X faster. Clearly it's not that s

It just happened wasn't using Numpy except in the most basic possible ways. I had hand-written algorithms in python. That's where it shines. So, yes YMMV! It worked really well for me.

I didn't know about snooze as an email feature, but a quick google shows it as something for gmail? Is that what you use? I see that there are 3rd-party solutions for MacOS. MacOS' Mail doesn't have that feature that I'm

It just runs all the time on my laptop. Every day at 9 it checks a sqlite3 database to see if there are tasks for the day. That's running in a thread. The main process has a little interface with a menu that lets you input a task, view

Something like 15 years ago I was at a conference and happened to sit at lunch table with a top editor of Scientific American. (Maybe the top one at the time, I don't remember.) I had been an enthusiastic subscriber for many years and

For years and years, I used to be very excited every time SA arrived in my mailbox. But over time, it dumbed itself down, with great consistency, to the point that it's unbearable. I stopped subscribing long ago.

You're taking a lot of flak here, but I think you're basically correct. (Even if cross-game NFTs never become a thing.) The debate reminds me of when Napster looked, to many, like it would end the sales of pre-recorded music, sinc

"lifetime" meaning "10 years" makes no sense at all. It makes your company seem incompetent or badly intentioned. Just say "10 years" if that's the time period.

Try REALLY listening to Flow, My Tears by John Dowland[1], who died in the early 1600's, well before Bach was even born. It sounds almost like a particularly beautiful McCartney song. There has been a true popular songwriting tradition
