People refusing to vote for the greater good because they want to preserve their own wealth (well, their wealth wouldn't be at risk but for some even given up $10 is intolerable in the service of society at large) is a great argument f

I'm not so sure about Coke or beer being worse. That sort of tea generally has just as much sugar as a can of coke (and the synthetic creamer is probably just as bad as the rest of what's in a coke). Both are quite unhealthy for y

It's amazing how similar the construction of the pipe segments and the pipe network is to ones I've seen from Roman times. Makes you wonder how many times such a thing has been reinvented over the millennia and how interesting it

Much of a city in China I have spent a lot of time in (Hangzhou) has protected bike lanes with their own signals and crossings. They do still interact with traffic at the crossings but the lanes are wide and well protected from vehicles. I

I have a friend there that was hired into a mid level developer role and he hates it for many reasons (from management style to the personality of teammates to how code gets reviewed and pushed and more). Just biding his time to get enough

Agreed. At our company the technical interview involves walking a dev through a working app that uses the same stack we develop with. There are bugs to solve, potential optimizations that exist and the dev explains and walks through the cli

Most folks would agree with you that we can use what we like but that isn't the reason for the vitriol. I think most of the vitriol comes from the way the it is presented as "the winner" when a lot of people either actively d

Many small merchants just refuse as well. Try to use Amex at the local Chinese food marts around me and they will not take them (and I don't blame them).

If that's the case, that the federal government backing the loans is what permits the increases, then why not just have the federal government pay up front and cut out the loan portion? Might give them more power to negotiate lower pri

That might be it. I was there every year for about a 15 year period but this may have been around the time of the 2010 Expo. Though I was not in hotels, I was in apartments (ones owned and lived in by Chinese, not foreigners).

Many years back I was running a socks proxy for access while in China and I found that it worked great in Shanghai but was rapidly blocked (or degraded in some fashion) in Hangzhou. That seemed internal and not edge but I do no really know

I first visited San Francisco almost 20 years ago and I loved it. I last went in late 2019 and I was horrified. The change was night and day from my perspective (and depressing as I saw this place that used to have a special vibe to me turn

Isn't human population already too high for the planet (or at least headed that way)? I would think that a trend in the other direction is good, on the whole and over the long run.

So far (super early days, I know) the main thing I've used AI for at work is to write tests for code I'm working on. I get to do the fun bit, solving the problem space, and the AI gets to do the tedious bit (and do it faster than
