I used https. Encrypted secrets go over the wire. Easier than OAuth for the programmer, as long as you can spare the overhead for the SSL handshakes.

For the love of god, please someone tell me what is so offensive about the semicolon. When you replace a thousand of them with commas, nothing has been gained! When you start placing them only at the beginning of certain lines, subject to J

That "explanation of why", when you take the trouble of reading it, is just an explanation of how. The article ends with: Conclusion - Using the comma trick to do { }-less indentation is far from viable. However this may still be useful f

As a programmer, I'd prefer to find out about actual bugs, rather than worry about the hypothetical legal consequences of potential name collisions in the entertainment media space. There is an actual bug here, but it's not in the code.

If the best name you can think of is already in use by a huge player in internet media, exposes you to legal attack, and will confuse potential users and customers, you need to keep thinking.

I hope Matthew Inman won't be shy about asking for legal defense donations, because I don't think his fans would be shy about giving them. With any luck, a good lawyer, and a few years clogging up the legal system, this could be an expensi

PG has the right to curate HN posts as he sees fit. I just think a little more transparency would go a long way. Hellbanning is, by design, sneaky. The fact that it's the predominant ban method is extremely frustrating for a non-maliciou

Upgrades: The SE/30 started its life as an SE, so it got the 68030+SuperDrive upgrade, and we put a monitor card in the expansion slot (which I later replaced with a 10BaseT card). Upped the RAM from 1MB to an intimidating 8MB. I think I s

Funny, I got ten years out of a Mac SE/30, four years out of a PowerBook G4 (Lombard), and five years out of a white iBook G4. I also used a Mac IIcx for almost a year, ten years after its release. My unibody MacBook 13" was on track too,

I know lots of folks who've added RAM and who've swapped out the spinning drive for an SSD. Maybe it's more of a "power user" thing, but here you are on Hacker News.

No, the customer just made a huge stink while their case was being reviewed and resolved. Newegg didn't get to where they are by stonewalling RMAs as a matter of course -- quite the opposite.

It's also remarkable to me that Newegg would become the target of an internet lynch mob. I know dozens of IT professionals and Newegg has done right by all of us for years. I can't think of another hardware retailer that's gotten better w

What's been gained here? You've traded away one line of boilerplate Perl understood by all, and now everyone who touches your code has to know the semantics of 'method'.

It's really not that different; you just end up declaring your input arguments one line lower than in most other languages. Not a big deal in practice. And with @_, you're free to use positional arguments, named arguments, variable arity,

In 1997, me and my beige box PC spent about a day building the GIMP alpha, excited for a Photoshop killer. Now it's 2012, fifteen years later, and we're high-fiving GIMP for the single window interface.

I refute that Fortran is axiomatically worse than Java. I've spent a few years working in each, so I got to know them decently well. Fortran is like C with great math support; that is to say, C is like Fortran with great systems facilities

The Boston API Jam was being put on principally by Sqoot, who are a NYC-based deals API company. Presumably they were trying to drum up interest in their platform. Now, see? Even you thought Boston had something to do with this!
