This article suffers from a bit of confusion over the difference between art and design. Art: don't use the color black (or build up to it.) Good tip from "childhood art teacher." Another way of putting it: don't use black unless you know w

Great article. Rajiv made it easy to understand the conceptual framework. The lesson is: always strive to be robust. Test your failure points deliberately. Applicable to more than just server scaling.

A contrary opinion. This blogger has repeatedly stated that these puff pieces about Gene Sharp (of which the CNN article is only the most recent example) are total BS. http://angryarab.blogspot.com/2012/06/oh-arab-influence-of-g...

An overly large sense of entitlement and lack of passion are the two biggest red flags for me. Someone with a great attitude but lack of skills can be trained; someone with a bad attitude can't be fixed (at least not by the hiring organizat

Perhaps this is the explanation for how Flame and Stuxnet had so many zero day exploits: the Feds crowdsourced them through the Grugq.

First, decide what kind of design you actually need. Write a really detailed design specification of what you're looking for. Don't worry about what programs the designer will use or the details of how they will accomplish the job. Just thi

With a Mac Pro, you can stick the original keyboard in a closet. With a laptop, you'd have two keyboards, plus a trackball and a trackpad.

All of the above. Audio, video, 3D. Any pro level design. Even print design. Having a Mac Pro with lots of storage and big monitors when you're working on a 300 page book with 300GB of photos is much less annoying than poking along with a l

Indeed, it's the mouse's fault. I switched to a trackball years ago and it's a vast improvement. Best one I've found so far is the Kensington "expert mouse" which has a wrist rest attached at the front.

By "get traction on side projects" I'll go with the assumption that you mean "enough to quit your day job." (If that's not correct, then this advice may not apply). Simple answer: save six to twelve months of living expenses from your day j

Is Facebook going to be the next AOL, left in the dust by a new innovator? The chances of that happening are excellent, in my opinion. However, consider the following revenue streams Facebook could generate using a paid membership model: Fa

Which companies will be the most spectacular flameouts of internet boom, 2.0? I don't think it's much of a stretch to predict Zynga has a good chance of making the list.

This is a good article for "big picture" thinking about how to grow a company. Lots of people get hung up on their specialty, and overly aggrandize their importance, instead of seeing the larger concepts. This is an article that helps bridg

In a perverse way, I kind of like annoying "upgrades" like this. Because I have even less incentive to use the more-annoying service, I don't use it at all; and thus have more time for productive activities.

Open a business bank account at a local bank. As you complete the paperwork, tell them you want to open a business credit card account too. If they're any good, they'll make it happen.

Isn't there a user agent switcher for iPad? That would seem to be the easy fix for such annoyances. (I don't have an iPad, but it seems like an obvious thing that would be available.)

There are a number of people who apparently monitor Wikipedia relentlessly, lest the truth appear. In general, they seem to be motivated by their devotion to the Big Lie, extremist political agendas, and general crankiness.

The "daily deal" space is rapidly being turned into a commodity service. I'd expect the splits to become even more favorable for merchants. How low can it go? Probably all the way to 10% or less for Groupon.
