On macOS AVFoundation (and so QuickLook and QuickTime) can open .flac files. The Music app can only playback a artificially limited number of formats and can't play FLAC.

iMessage in iCloud is end-to-end. Probably you are confusing it with the iCloud Backup, which is not. iCloud Backup contains the Messages in iCloud keys anyway, so if you want the best security it's better to not use iCloud Backup. ht

There is a compiler option to disable overflow/underflow checks, so unless the overflow is in some library outside your control, it's not actually an issue.

The decoder is deterministic. The encoder is free to decide where to allocate more bit of which block type is better in a specific place or other things. A software encoder can be improved without replacing the entire cpu/gpu.

Because an app can disable loading libraries/plugins signed with a different developer id certificate, and it seems Core Media IO wants to load the plugin in the actually app process, and it doesn't use an helper process.

The reason is that Mail thinks the mail server is unreachable, so it brings the window to front, but then magically it changes idea and the mail server is reachable again ️.
