Why isn't everyone just quitting their day jobs and becoming Bitcoin miners? It's like the modern day Gold Rush!

sensationalist as opposed to the current title? Any other recommendations?

I 100% agree. Bringing someone who has never built something to their first hackathon completely introduces them to a whole new world of possibilities. One of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

What do you think about me changing the title to "How hackathons took Michigan by storm?"
215.
by gailees 13y ago
Interesting. I was trying to talk about how we got to the point where we have been able to invade hackathons all across the country out of nowhere. I'll look into revising the title to better reflect that. Any suggestions?

It's really amazing how well YC selects their companies, and how effectively they propel their startups forward. When talking to YC founders, you can just tell that there is something different about them.

Interesting. This really got me thinking: "Dependence on pot isn’t a minor thing—imagine stalling the careers of a tenth of the U.S. workforce for a year—and we should certainly consider it in the negative side of the ledger when contemplat

Parse is an amazing product. Facebook just killed it on this acquisition if they can find a way to leverage Parse's ability to provide quicker deployment and their position as a great platform for rapid distribution.

This is why I love hackathons. Let's encourage people to ship. We can worry about quality once we have got people actually started writing code!

it's not really about the startups that spin out of them as much as it is about inspiring people to build!

Now, do you really think people get injured at a hackathon? this is the worst account of negative physical effects brought on by hackathons I've seen: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5302940

There are wayyy more than 7. This post just scratches the surface of the hackathon value prop.

I think the hackathon is more for helping people dive in and go from 0 to something. After that, learning more comprehensively is definitely crucial.

would you have been in CS without hackathons though?

by gailees 14y ago
With MHacks, one of our main focuses was to bring in students who had never been to a hackathon before. There's honestly not a better vehicle that I've seen for getting students pumped about CS.
