I have seen a trend in UK PhDs in the last 10 years or so to include much more of the "practical skills" type work. There's certainly been a big push around the "Researcher Development Framework" [0]. I would say th

Sheesh, I had the 15% usage issue as well when in the foreground of the downloader (and also wondered why it was using GPU to show a basic screen). I never popped it into the background to see that. I wonder if the lack of framerate cap cou

Agreed, although most of this will end up wrapped up into the token and system itself, I suspect. U2F is pretty much a "key" (some even visually looking like keys) that are used pretty much like a physical key - put the key into t

Yeah, I can understand wanting the downloader to exist outside of the game (so they can update a broken game out-of-band) - that's all reasonable. The issue is, as you say, a single-threaded "download-extract-next" flow... It

These are good tips for flying GA and getting started in the sim. Older versions of FS used to teach more of the ground school theory than the current version. I did the tutorial just out of curiosity but it didn't really teach enough

The downloader itself also just doesn't meet the level of quality I'd expect Microsoft would want before putting their name to something. Microsoft is meant to be all about cloud, and this seems to be a single threaded downloader,

Putting aside the embedded beneath the skin aspect (I share your concerns), this concept can actually work - see FIDO2 and U2F protocols. They're actually pretty good from a privacy perspective too, and give you unlinkability between s

I guess the approaches taken with U2F tokens here (and FIDO2) makes sense - have more than one token enrolled, and allow either to be used. It's not perfect and there are usability issues around this, but they're mostly solvable.

That's the same conclusion I reached here. I also think when you pause (i.e. hit escape, not talking live pause where the sim keeps running), the game continues to render the full scene in the background, even though there's conte

It also seems the menus were designed by designers that had no "performance budget" cap - looking at performance, the menus only hit a sensible FPS when on the loading screen. The sheer amount of animation and transparency in the

I've been doing similar, although reached a slightly different conclusion. It seems to me that the menus (even idling in them) use full GPU. I'm not convinced it's necessarily rendering stuff (and if it was, it really ought t

It's a very good (and new) simulation model. The issue is that it's pretty buggy, and performance is varied. I think there is real potential for it to be optimised into being much better (very poor use of multi core CPU for exampl

The inability to take advantage of large numbers of cpu cores is my biggest disappointment from a technical perspective. I don't know why you'd rewrite the game and fail to design it for modern core counts. The micro stutter is ve

It seems that this kind of weakness in tenant isolation is something that's hard to avoid in a public cloud environment, yet really critical to get right, to preserve confidence in it. Yet given the nature of SPF and DMARC, they'r
