Pedantic: Standard outlets are 16A in mainland Europe, so 3.7kW. Modern single ovens can also be connected to a standard single phase outlet rather than a dedicated circuit. In my kitchen the induction cooktop is on a 16A three phase circui

At least in the EU the "no one cares" is changing. Member states need to have legislation in place that means from 2020 all new builds are "nearly carbon zero" (unfortunately left to interpretation by country). In my cou

Why is it so expensive to install solar in the US? In the UK you can get a 3kw grid tied system installed for under £5000 ($6100), and around double for a 9kw system - a lot of the cost is renting scaffolding and having people on site to do

Most of these look like user stupidity rather than anything wrong with the car. Especially the video of the guy who trys to summon his car across a road. I imagine summon is pretty dumb, but all Tesla's talk of autopilot and self-drivi

It's also worth mentioning that once you are in space things are relatively easy. You only need around 20% more deltaV to get from Earth to Mars, as from Earth to the Moon (assuming a one way trip).

In Europe over the last few years they changed restaurants so all burgers are made on demand. The only advantage I see is outside of peak times your meal is fresher, and they potentially have less wastage. But as you say it has definately i

I'm interested to know if the test pilot in their simulator knew this was going to happen or not. I'm thinking if they knew the risk (which this disclosure provides) they may have been more aware and have seen there was a problem.

Are their systems accurate enough to identify an aircraft being 15m off the centerline of the runway? Take the incident at SFO a few years ago where an aircraft nearly landed on the taxiway - it was only detected by a pilot on the ground (o

Modern machines vary the water consumption based on the load, so in reality it's even less. On a 40c wash they will consume around 0.5kWh of electricity.

It's pretty common in Northern European countries too - even in winter. On a sunny winters day when it's -20C it's perfectly comfortable with the right clothing and footwear (which isn't expensive).

I bought a used Dell workstation with a 8c16t Xeon E5-2670 and 32GB ECC DDR3 RAM a few years ago. It's a bit outdated now, but it's still faster than the most laptops (for multi core workloads). At the time I had a MacBook Air, so

Take a look at some of the European armoured doors, especially those in Italy. The door and frame come as a single piece, where the frame is made from hardened steel. I assume the door is too, but they are covered in some sort of veneer. Th

Just bear in mind the build quality of Ideapad and other budget Lenovo brands aren't great. The ThinkPad (X, T or P series) really is in a class of its own in terms of build quality, upgradability and repairability.

Why not just feed cows on grass, which is what they traditionally eat? In the UK cows usually graze outdoors in fields during the summer, and in the winter they usually stay in barns where they are fed on hay and silage (usually from fermen

It's interesting it only has 4GB of RAM, considering Android phones usually have more. The Samsung S10+ comes with 12GB for example. Apple must be laughing over not having to pay three times as much for RAM. 12GB seems overkill though.

Have there been any developments on glass technology than can repel water? I use a anti-rain coating (a la Rain-X) which works pretty well, but you need to be above 80km/h for it to work effectively.
