Out of all the problems our country has with insurance firms, I'm not sure "they cover too much" is one of them.

I boot into Windows for work since our whole stack is Windows-based and it's just easier that way. I agree that to a pretty large extent the OS doesn't matter when developing. This is especially true when everything is up and running fine.

Tip: The default Bourne-shell-compatible prompts end with $ while the default C-shell-compatible prompts end with % or >. (zsh is an exception to this.) Root (super-user) prompts often end with # by default. Of course, this behavior is

Well, its usage is different for different's sake in the context of the web, and that's what I meant. I know this style of numeral is old, but I'm saying that its age does not make it good. We also used to substitute "f" for "s" in some sce

I know that this numeric style is old, I'm used to seeing it in older texts. But it's one of the (many) things that was lost in the web's super-simplified typography, and I personally don't want it back. I just think it looks bad and is har

I really, really dislike that style of numerals. It just looks like they're bouncing all around the baseline. Please don't use that, designers. Different != good.

I've been working from home since August 2010. The part where you get up on time, shower, shave, dress well, etc, is very important, as the author says. It's psychological - you're gearing yourself up for a day of work. If there is no physi

http://www.springframework.net/ Spring handles a lot for you, but learning to use it and (especially) debug/troubleshoot it is like learning another framework on top of .NET. It even has its own language (called SpEL).

You've really gotta be looking for something to disagree with if that's what you've decided to hang your hat upon. The words "right now" were emphasized in the original sentence for a reason. If taking away commissions didn't hurt sales, wh

Maybe that's why I feel so crazy whenever I try to use it. We can have bitmapped interfaces now, no need for the arcaneness of vi and similar editors.

You know what's interesting about the comments on this story? You're posting a lot of comments telling people to charge more money because the work they're doing is valuable and the market is tight, and almost all of them are telling you wh

If you think Hacker News sucks that bad, you're free to go read reddit and bitch about the users there. This comment is shitty and cynical and you should feel bad about it.

Have you ever seen Hofstadter try to summarize the idea conveyed in the book? He really is not able to, and so I think the book pretty much boils down to "hey here's a bunch of weird/cool stuff." Which is not such a bad thing. But for me, t

I'm sorry, are you trying to say that this administration is doing too little to protect intellectual property? If you're saying the IP issues are being left to someone who doesn't respect IP, that is the only conclusion I can draw.

"Open letter to sites with annoying interfaces"?! Maybe I'll write an open letter to traffic. Or an open letter to waiting in line at the post office. Or an open letter to humidity.
