Ha, I remember finding the adult section of the file uploads. It took fourteen year old me thirty minutes to download one jpeg of boobs. LoRD was fantastic, as were the turn based games that other people would dial in to take part of. It

DDR4 production is winding down or done. Only "new old stock" will remain, or used DDR4 modules. Good luck buying that in quantity.

We're looking to buy 1TB of DDR5 for a large database server. I'm pretty sure that we're just going to pay the premium and move on.

~2.8x for DDR4, ~3.6x for DDR5. DDR5 is still being made, though, so it will be interesting to see how it changes in the future. Either way, it's going to be a long few years at the least.

Unless plans have changed, the foundries making DDR4 are winding down, with the last shipments going out as we speak.

Because they can provide the materials to NVIDIA for production and prevent Google, Anthropic, etc from having them.

They're not. They are buying wafers / production capacity to make HBM so there is less DDR5 supply.

If everyone went for DDR4 and DDR3, surely the cost would go up. There is no additional supply there, as they are no longer being made.

I have a bag of SIMMs that I saved, no idea why, because I clearly wrote BAD on the mylar bag. At time time I was messing around with the "badram" patch for Linux.

I bought 2x16 (32GB) DDR4 in June for $50. It is now ~$150. I'm kicking myself for not buying the mini PC that I was looking at over the summer. The cost nearly doubled from what it was then. My state keeps trying to add Data Centers

Historically, yes. But we haven't had historical demand for AI stuff before. What happens when OpenAI and NVIDIA monopolize the majority of DRAM output?

When I think of insects, I see them as tiny microcontrollers. In my head bees have a little shift register to measure time. While ants have control over each limb, they mostly move by rotating two tripods one at a time. It's like they

I have always been enamored with "social" insects like bees, wasps, and ants. I _loved_ SimAnt as a child. It also blows my mind that I utterly balk at eating insects but bee vomit is totally cool.

I'm okay with it for comparison's sake. As a long-time runit user, systemd does far better with sequencing things. With runit you have to have a check executable, and then run 'sv check servicename' in the start script

I do the same thing, although as "embedded" systems get bigger I've moved some things over to systemd. It's a little complicated to set up if your root file system is read-only, since runit really wants to write to the d
