Nitpick: the press of course did remove the humanity from book-copying work, before that the people copying books often made their own alterations to the books. And had their own calligraphic styles etc. But my thought was that the printing

Does iOS let you run it in another process? That's a common technique to isolate your app from crashy 3rd party components. This can work if you don't pass it untrusted data. If there's untrusted data coming in and you give i

Nah, you could easily have much more than 10k threads on regular hardware for a long time with the traditional threads. c10k was coined in the last millenium when a brand new PC would have 128 MB of memory and a single core 400 MHz cpu. And

What's the evidence that there's "flooding the market" going on? It seems to me wind turbine prices have followed a plausible looking downwards hill and there's no sign of dumping excess inventory or otherwise unsus

No, it's about the same bottleneck that also explains the tapering off of single core performance. We can't extract more parallelism from the single flow-of-control of programs, because operations (and esp control flow transfers)

Docker products are a maze of naming confusion. If comparing to Docker Desktop (which exists for Linux too) then it's related since that's also a virtual machine system.

Enterprises are frequently antipattern zoos. If you have many teams you can use the modular monolith pattern instead of microservices, that way you have the separation but not the distributed system.

Yes, and it was terrible, a bit like now the GPU compiler landscape is terrible with proprietary mutually incompatible buggy compilers and sw stacks being forced on developers.

The cloudiness is accounted for in the visualization, otherwise you wouldn't see that much variation on the same latitudes. But yep the sun angle affects things too like I mentioned.

You could be forgiven to think that about northern places, but the dark winters are compensated by the long (or even round the clock) daylight in summer. It's still fewer sunlight hours than markedly sunny places like italy or californ

In the good systems there's two pipes, return gets its own (like eg the earlier linked PDF describes), so it's fine for buildings to output cooler water to the return pipe. But yes heat pumps are used in some parts as well in DH.

I think it's more like 90C in (winter), 40C out. The temps have been going down in newer infrastructure as it's more energy efficient. See eg https://www.shcbysweden.se/wp-content/uploads/2019/11

The higher temperature output is a good point, you can't get 400C output for industrial processes from a 100C water based heat battery.

Also back then multicore wasn't as prevalent, it made sense to multiplex a zillion things onto one CPU process. Whereas now servers have hundreds of cores / SMT vCPUs [1] and running a lot of processes makes much more sense. [1]

I think this is for the best. We don't want to end up like Rust. The complexity tradeoff suits Python's sweet spot even less (much less).

"Years" is technically correct I guess - recent EPRs have taken 18 years from license to grid. Hinkley C 2012-2031 (projected). Flamanville 3 2006-2024. Olkiluoto 3 2005-2023. This is way too much latency. Every little bit helps
