Strong disagree, going to FAANG or alternatively a larger company respected for engineering chops will open a lot of doors. It definitely did for me. Also the sore reality is assholes are everywhere, and smaller companies have less rail gu

Cubicles are my worst nightmare. Enclose me into a tiny space separated from the world so I can reach “peak efficiency”. The most depressing job I had was with a relatively large cubicle. I’ll take an open office space any day of the week,

If I rephrase the argument, you are saying we should not have UBI to provide the lower class with a safety net because some people are bad with their finances? It could be good to question why some people are bad with their finances, or exp

Don’t forget the famous car test! A mix is not complete until it sounds good in an old Toyota Camry from the 90s.

100%, and calling aesthetics an appeal to vanity and ego is a reductive take. I love that individual’s websites have different styles which reflect either them personally or their brand. That can mean going all out in design, or having an H

Save for big tech and unicorn startups, most companies I hear about still have trouble hiring experienced engineers.

You just ranted and called a bunch of engineers entitled for wanting a higher salary in addition to other things. What kind of responses did you expect to get?

This ignores internal efforts to speed-up Ruby and make it concurrency safe. Facebook took this method and did well with it. Hack is typed, and its perf is fast. Shockingly fast.

Stripe has a large perf cut every year. Layoffs were mostly done by product areas / teams / orgs. I think layoffs being performance-based is true in some minority of cases but false overall.

I started my career solely as a C dev and got pretty good at it. This is by far the most useful resource whenever I have to dip my toes back into it.

I am going to be less generous and suggest that some people just want to hate on macs for the sake of hating on macs. Sticking it to the “man”. I’m a bit obsessed with audio.. and I never expect my laptop speakers to match the quality of my

I agree you should know how to use a debugger, however will also note that some companies mandate use of a specific IDE (or heavily encourage). I have seen devs scoff at the thought of print debugging, but I recall that in systems programmi

My short introduction into the fab industry exactly echos this. Allowing US companies to turnaround prototypes quickly is a valuable business. Perhaps they aim to get a foothold with this and slowly ramp up to high volume manufacturing.

I think this is key for why forums were great. You have a single thread for a discussion topic / post, so anyone getting defensive, flaming, or trolling gets lost in the thread as people reply to highly quality posts in the thread.

Honestly this article reinforces the value of neovim in my mind. I started with vi, then learned vim, then emacs, and now I am using neovim. The world of 2023 is different than the world of 1991, and neovim is an incredibly capable editor w

The DSM-5 was released in 2013 with some extensive changes - but this is not mentioned in Jonathan Haidt’s essay. The DSM-5 had several changes in diagnosis that could explain the sharp rise in his graphs. That we simply got a view of how b
