Well, sorry to be so low-tech and all, but I tackle this problem in a couple of ways: 1. A (private) blog - person with the idea posts it, discussion happens in the comments. Pluses: Easy, clients for everything under the sun, easy mail gat

Right, but presumably the owner can reply with "For the record we only use hand-cut fried cooked in duck fat" to that review? I am not insensitive to the point, that an individual customer may be poorly placed to be a reliable critic, but I

Thanks for an interesting article. I think some of the problem is just adjustment into a new medium. Those of us who have been net-savvy for a while know how to read reviews - I am pretty confident we can all tell an irrational impossible-t

Following your doctor's advice on these issues is a sure way to ruin your health. I actually don't agree with that. While I am willing to believe that the average doctor's understanding of nutrition is incomplete, I doubt the average punt

"Don’t say currently if you can say now." Hmm. To me, the most interesting thing about English is that there is a lot of additional meaning invested in what seems to be a choice of synonymous words. "I am not currently married" conveys to

Do you care if you have reduced your risk of CVD death, if risk of other deaths increase? I might if I have a family history of heart disease. I might if I have confounding factors for CVD (like being on oral contraceptives). The point is

That looks useful (well, not to personally to me, but I can see the attraction). I think you are working in a fertile area. In my last trip I used the iPhone app Postino to send snail-mail postcards using pictures from the iPhone - it worke

Okay: 1. I hope everyone realises that reading one abstract online does not constitute medical advice, or even the true state of scientific knowledge on the field. 2. If regardless you do intend to base your life decisions based on someth

The overall goal here is not to make any one person feel like a special snowflake If I understood the OP, their issue is not that they don't feel like a special snowflake - it's that this is a site that is driven, among other things, by t

Many years ago (early 90s?) I looked into a job in Antarctica. The job stipulated that you had to preventatively remove your appendix prior to your tour of duty to avoid exactly this situation. I believe they also wanted you to replace your

Well, it is personal, it is also seriously obfuscated - it started off something like for(split(//,'*)))*1)11.41))9291:.3+*A11:1:3)/+,))9:' and of course that was part of the fun - since I had received it in paper form, I had to type

Too much non-story "stuff" - at full screen height I get 4 stories on the front page. HN gives me 26. Clearly you can't go as minimalist as HN, but I really think you want to do better than 4. Also, do you want to ask people to vote before
