It's a big allegation. This email didn't strike me as an overly emotional response. It was a very firm refutation from a respected member of the community about a hefty accusation.

This is real science. It took three years to be sure; and for an announcement like this, the investigators want to be sure before they put their reputations behind it.

Hold on, hold on a second. Let's put this in perspective. This brand new ATI flagship card has a whopping 24 cores clocked at 880 MHz and a memory bus capable of 5.5 GB/sec. There's no general purpose API here; everything is shaders.

Why? As a professional security researcher, what makes you believe this is unlikely? I'm not saying I disagree with you, but it seems like you have additional context for an a priori belief that this isn't what happened.

I was more talking about bcrypt being consensus with that post. Salting slows down cracking attempts by a factor of N where N is the length of the hash; md5 and sha1 are so fast that you shouldn't be banking on salting to protect you in 20

Yes, this is consensus. "Salting" isn't actually a real security practice. See: http://chargen.matasano.com/chargen/2007/9/7/enough-with-the...

I bet we're going to see a bunch of "Heroku for X" now that they've set a precedent. I'm not sure that's a bad thing; it's a great idea.

This is much more clear than that. The entire community is rallying around CUDA & NVIDIA. Never once have I been talking to someone about GPU computing (and I work with it) and has someone mentioned AMD chips. NVIDIA holds the GPU Te

There are actually some very interesting efforts around building languages that compile to PTX ("Parallel Thread Execution"). NVIDIA treated it as a trade secret in the beginning and so only now is that really beginning to take off. The i

OpenCL is the most verbose, awkward monster I have ever seen . No exaggeration. The "Hello World" of GPGPU in OpenCL is over 100 lines long. Use CUDA directly. Get access to new features as the chips ship and a much nicer interface. NV

I don't think gang members do it for the money, but rather for the social status. By definition you don't have that here; as soon as someone proclaims herself a "leader" they get raided just as hard as any of Anon's targets. Moot has a lo

I think it was mostly oss (maybe with local changes, re: why not download a fresh copy?), but there was some proprietary code in there (which may or may not have been intentional), which is what tripped him up.

This exploit wasn't at the expense of the taxypayer; it's net-zero for the Mint. It's at the expense of the airlines who have to back the miles generated from nothing. Edit: Ok I admit defeat here. I don't think the costs are anywhere nea

This was figured out by FlyerTalk last year and worked for about 3 months before the Mint caught on and changed the terms of credit purchase to be a cash advance, which doesn't qualify for rewards and carries additional interest terms. Tha

Matt_Cutts is technically a web spam expert, but he is also a generally high profile public facing Googler who knows such things. Maybe he doesn't follow android, or maybe it would be inappropriate to answer this; but it doesn't seem crazy

Any Googlers here (Matt_Cutts?) in a position to comment on how long we'll be waiting to hear about this? Because being accepted as a tester would absolutely make my December.

You can create a C Corp with legalzoom. That said, at my last company we incorporated in delaware with the Company Corporation and had to spend about $10k when we raised our series a on restructuring all that and documenting things.

Groupon isn't a personalization play; it's an anti-personalization one. Literally the deals only happen if many people want them. While interesting and valuable, incredibly detailed targeting is kind of tangential.

Nonsense. We have no idea we're reconstructing -- the governing dynamics of cortical, much less subcortical, interactions are still nearly totally unknown to us -- and memristors do nothing to shed light on that. Further, neural codes are
