No. This is the wrong response. Just as the general public shouldn't be afraid of things like this, we shouldn't be afraid of the regulatory response. It is our responsibility to fight that response and preserve fun. If hacker news's

Why? They're already so cheap the military could buy an unlimited number of them. Or because people will use them to remove military security? I don't follow your logic.

Calculus is taught in high school and expected to be basic knowledge for any physician, even if they don't use it often, and especially so for researchers. Calculus is fair game on their admissions exam, even! On the other hand, there

I just discovered Ted Dziuba through your post. This is incredible. He's like a mini Zed Shaw. http://teddziuba.com/2008/04/im-going-to-scale-my-foot-up-y.... http://teddziuba.com/2009/09/twisted-vs-tornado-youre-both.h... http://ted

It has to do with electronegativity and number of free electrons. Both phosphorous and arsenic can make three bonds, and arsenic is only very slightly less electronegative than phosphorous.

I don't think this is hindsight bias though. As a scientist (not in biochemistry or astrobiology, though) I understand this had to be specifically shown, but this is one of those things that most people I talk to and I have always just cas

This seems silly. Phosphorous not being required for life seems obvious to me: ok, maybe it's believed to be used in all Earth-originated, carbon-based life, but why would we believe a priori that it's an absolutely necessary component of

Is that really uncommon? Where was your average "young powerful elite" a whole twelve years ago? I think that on average they were lowly grad students or undergrads a decade ago. The bounds for movement over 12 years is huge. It's a l

I've wondered for a long time what 4chan vs the government would look like. They're unbelievably creative and resourceful (see http://www.urlesque.com/2010/11/18/hot-topic-rage-guy-shirt-... for a good recent example). I figured they wo
