yeah, that's why you want to find one that won't. or at least, won't do it in a way that will leave you high and dry without notice.

My recommendation would be to run your own DNS on your own IP addresses. Even with the IP shortage, you should be able to get a small block delegated to you that you can use for your mission critical apps. Once you've got that arranged for,

I accept your point but reject the generalization. Not all registrars have embraced the prevailing approach you've identified - we've embraced exactly the opposite and work extremely hard to be as transparent and uncomplicated as possible.

Speaking only for myself, there's only a certain amount of opportunism that I'm comfortable with in piling on when a competitor stumbles, especially when it is rooted in politics. For example, Tucows does a ton of great work to support vari

Domain registrars have a long history of making transfers hard. Godaddy isn't the only registrar to do stuff like the 60 day lock. I just wrote up a piece on my blog yesterday about this very subject - http://www.byte.org/2011/12/26/evolvi

Its not as clear when you are seeing traffic from a reseller like Namecheap. I can imagine that their query traffic comes through enom and their own systems depending on the TLD in question.

By casual view, I mean from the customer side. The change triggered an alarm pretty quickly and from the back-end the cause was pretty obvious and quickly fixed.

These types of things happen all the time behind the scenes. The entire domain registration system is very loosely coupled as it relates to transfers - too loose imo, and breakage is really easy. We had a situation last week where a registr

Most of the transfers we do take place in just a few minutes - a few hours is pretty common. Taking days is generally a boundary case nowadays. oBDisclaimer - I work for a huge registrar.

Is this a Namecheap specific issue or more general to eNom who they are a reseller for. Nothing on the enom system status page... http://www.enom.com/registrynews.asp

NC is an enom reseller, so I'd guess that all of enom would be affected as well. Nothing on the eNom status page, so not sure... http://www.enom.com/registrynews.asp

Most transfers complete within hours. Some take as long as 3-5 days, but a good registrar can make it happen very quickly nowadays. To your point, I can say that our retail transfer rate for the 22nd was up 10x from the prior day, the 23rd,

Not really hundreds of thousands of dollars. They already have the money and none of it gets transferred to the new registrar. If you move a domain name from Godaddy to Hover that has five years left before expiry, I have to support you for

The ICE seizures relied on this. Also of worry is the nexus created by the Regional Internet Registries (ARIN, etc.) which manage the address space and associated policy. ARIN manages the IP address space for US, Canada, many Caribbean and

Yeah - mostly, sorta... :) Registries and ICANN do require registrars to include certain clauses in their contracts with end-users/registrants, but I'm not aware of any that include vague morality clauses. This document - http://www.opensr

There's a lot of truth in these comments. The most effective change is productive change. Don't like something? Do something that's better. Look at startups like Square who are turning payment processing on its ear, or our project, Ting.com

This article makes an argument that I've heard from other SOPA supporters today - if you don't want to work with us, don't have any alternatives and don't want to propose improvements, then we should proceed with SOPA. Its such a ridiculous

Probably for similar reasons to Godaddy supporting it and smaller registrars not. The larger players likely view it as much easier to absorb the impacts of the bill as a cost of doing business that puts the squeeze on the smaller players. C
