No, there are means to handle that as well. For instance, I could just invoke their username and let the software handle the linking and notification. Perhaps it needs a trigger like @ or not to separate regular conversation from usernames,

The author's argument seems to be hinging on his notion that Google has "superior everything", "it is Google after all". I was with him to a point - the notion of absorbing products into features of G+ is a powerful strategy that would make

this thread seems to have nailed both grouping and addressing with nary an @ or a #. I'd say that was simple - I just hit reply.

@ and # may define Twitter, but there are simpler and more accessible means of addressing users and creating groups/topics categories.

I'm tempted to write a blog post about the difference between productivity and effectiveness. If you are working for someone whose sole focus is your productivity, take it as a warning sign. The only thing that matters is results and the si

Well, yeah - that's kind of what I was trying to point out earlier - I just was just afraid of coming across as snarky :) I chalked it up to literary license on behalf of the writer - it doesn't seem like a rational business goal on its fac

I'm a huge fan. The headcount projection caused me to pause a bit. Tripling staffing to almost 400 people seems like a huge jump. I wonder what else they've got going on - it feels like a big number for it all just to be allocated solely ag

My advice? Go out and find something really hard to do to give your business issues some context. I'm a record-holding ultra-endurance cyclist and only came to the sport later in my business career. It was amazing to me how much more mana

Another way to look at it is "Am I burning effectively?". If you're being honest, the answer is usually no. Unless your money is free, a lot can be achieved with no new burn. I like to keep tinder (cash) dry until we've found a way to be ef

All I want to know is how this got to be the top story on HackerNews. Its a blatant PR grab on one side, and borderline infantile on the other. Yuck on both counts.

Yes, you are right - unless they are a service-oriented company, in which case, they will jump through hoops to make it right for you, no matter how surly you are when you present your issue.

There's an old saw that says "Work is like high school, but with money". Feels appropriate to this story. More generally, I'm always amazed at how easily managers/founders can get caught up in the game of publicly toying with other companie

IIRC, there are only a few commissioners who don't come from Canada's media/telco industries. i.e. the commission is mostly populated by insiders from the industries that the CRTC purports to oversee and regulate. Fox, henhouse, etc. http:

The snag is that you'll still have to make an investment in helping the reseller, training him, supporting the end-customer through him, etc., but you'll take a hit on your margin. Worse still, he'll own the customer and you'll have had to

I'd love one :-) but there are tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of kids that could benefit from devices like these. I have no medical training, but the benefits seem obvious. Someone with some ambition would do well to track down the man

I struggle with the notion of friction on our site. It is easy to talk about and very hard to action. For example, I can use optimizely to tell me which approach I'm considering my convert better, and there is no way to know what the baseli

Agree. My gut says that some founders may look at sexy as a way to shortcut the hard work of marketing and being remarkable, probably not an explicit choice, but I can definitely see how one might lean towards trendy as a way to light up th

OT: man do I hate it when companies tout meaningless business metrics as a measure of achievement. Two billion API calls might be cool, but $2b in revenue would be a lot cooler.

Well... people don't deserve ridicule and they deserve respect. As much as I preach "all feedback is positive feedback", I don't think that means we should stop treating people like human beings. Its just generally bad form.
