Michael O'Hare (Berkeley Prof) has an article about why public transit really wants to be subsidized: http://www.samefacts.com/2007/05/energy-and-environment/more... The short version is that the marginal cost for an additional rider is b

It still grates me a little when they talk about "factoring large primes". I realize that what they mean, "factoring the product of two large primes," is a bit long-winded, but why not just "factoring large numbers"?

I've had this problem in the past and continue to have it occasionally. I'm not usually thirsty and/or hungry, but usually my mind will wander and I'll start getting excited about some project I'm working on or (worse) start worrying about

It's an interesting area of research, but nothing especially new: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_suspension The trouble is almost always with how much energy these systems suck down, typically increasing fuel consumption by 5-10%.

I wrote a couple of blog posts on this, but here's the summary: My secret hope is that it has an eInk screen that slides down to reveal an LCD, at which point the eInk acts as a reconfigurable keyboard for netbook-style interaction. I'm als

HFCS 55 is actually (according to Wikipedia, anyway), about as sweet as sucrose. Even pure fructose "is generally regarded as being 1.73 times sweeter than sucrose," so I'm not sure where they're getting the six times number.

In defense of the OP, one of Gruber's favorite pastimes is his so-called "claim chowder". This involves excerpting and/or linking to a columnist's vehement -- and, as it turns out, spectacularly wrong -- past arguments about the existence/s
