Having been in your position about 6 years ago, reading a ton of books and websites, I'd def. say don't waste your money on books about programs like photoshop/illustrator, etc, as they become outdated very quickly. Take fgblanch's advice,

I know I'm not the one that asked the question, but I've been looking for these types of resources for a longtime. The w3fools one was especially eye opening, and the topics at greenspun are very interesting too! I'm off to learn, yeay!!!
