The bootloader for Sparc systems @ Sun is still OpenBoot, written in Forth: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Firmware I worked on it a bit, though it doesn't change much beyond bug fixes these days. Peripheral v

No no no. You can't predict where that library is going to be used. Check the return value of malloc, communicate the failures to the caller and let them handle it in an application-appropriate way. They may want to crash, and they may

No, this was not a case of "not meeting my needs". I read your papers and carefully considered whether the design goals worked for me. It was a case of "poorly implemented and poorly tested". I know lwIP is widely used,

I've had mixed results with Contiki in the past. Several of their modules are of extremely poor quality. The coffee filesystem in particular is an un-redeemable mess of bugs. Great OS to experiment with, but I would not recommend build

Worse because unsophisticated investors ("family offices" and "moms and pops") will have unrealistic expectations. Those expectations will have to meet reality sooner or later, and when that happens: * Life savings w

LPs investing in startups directly, followed by retail investors (JOBS act). If you thought we were already in a bubble, hang on to your seats, it's about to get much worse.

I worry that extensions that implement their own navigation and user experience will no longer be possible. I use Vimperator extensively and would hate to see it go. Chrome does have Vimium, but it is quite clunky and limited compared to th

I don't think the 4 story limit is the problem. The vast majority of buildings in Paris are 4 to 5 stories, and they achieve much higher density.

Disclaimer: I am an H1B visa holder (though likely on my way out) You hit the nail on the head. This is why rather than more H1Bs we need a better H1B. IMO doing away with the lottery and granting the visa to the <N> highest paid ap

Some day I will write a blog post about the tricks we have to pull off to fit all code & assets - or get animations running at 30FPS - on Pebble. Trust me when I say this: low level development is alive and well at hardware companies.

If Apple does the linking of the final binary for you, you won't have a way to recover the symbols <-> address mappings you need to desymbolicate (that'd the dSym file you usually upload to hockeyapp)

this is an unmitigated disaster for HP. What this signals to me is that they have given up on commercializing memristors any time soon. That's a $500M write-down (not as bad as autonomy I guess) and the end of their most promising R&am

I don't understand why so many businesses use a product with such a weak SLA as their main mode of communication. Both Hipchat and Slack have terrible uptime guarantees, and you should stay away from them.

Actually I'd take a good Fortran or Pascal developer any day. What programming language they know isn't relevant. If they're a good engineer they'll figure out javascript or whatever the flavor of the month is.

I would love to have syntax highlighting in nvALT (~notational velocity), but wouldn't switch away from it for that feature alone. Having tried out quiver, it's not nearly as fast to use.
